Using a used ring and pinion bad idea?

I have a set of 3:42s from a 95 Camaro. The guy said it had 18k on it when he pulled them for 4:10s. He said he didn't abuse them. I am upgrading the rear with superior axles, auburn posi and a TA rear end cover. The usual strength mods. I am taking out a set of whining 4:10s to rebuild it with these goodies.

My brother (mechanic) looked at these gears and said they look to be in perfect shape. I am still leaning on buying a new set just for peace of mind. Not sure.

If I do, whats brand would you recommend? I haven't had any luck with Richmonds.

Also, if any chance someone in the southern WV area reads this, where is a good gear install shop near Charleston or Huntington? I'd have my brother install them but he's 400 miles away.

Run the used ones if they look how your brother said they look, 18k miles is nothing. The 4.56 gears in my 9 inch are used with unknown history. Zero problems with them so far.

used gears are ok, just be sure to check the teeth, which it sounds like your bro said is ok, dont get a used posi unit thought, id recomend a detroit true trac for a LSD, its a non cluch style one

The posi I got is a Auborn unit with 9k on it from a 4th gen. The guy said they simply upgraded to an Eaton so I hope it's good. This is the last 7.5 rear I'll ever put together though. I am going to have a 9" fund set aside to save up for one.

I'll see if I can post a pic of the gears later tonight.
