What aftermarket rear end do you guys recommend for 600hp?

I have an 82 Z28 with a 350 bored 30 over and a 6-71 Weiand putting out 600hp. Problem is, it has a posi rear out of a GTA!! Those 3.23's and stock rear aren't going to last long. I have been to Strange, Currie, Moser etc. and by the time it is all said and done a new rear looks to be around $3,000. Are there other options out there that aren't so tough on the wallet? I have been searching for used aftermarket rears for third gen's, but they seem to be VERY rare. Any help is appreciated!

Ben

What year GTA? You could try a 9-bolt out of an 85-89 f-body, but there's no telling if that will hold either. Your best bet is to suck it up and spend the money for a Dana 60, 12-bolt, or 9" rear.

Dana 60 is nice but it's overkill.

You're not going to find a bolt in junkyard diff other than what you've got so your only options are to run what you have until it breaks then decide how much you want to spend on a better diff. You can buy a complete bolt in 12 bolt or 9" for around $2500 but your guess of $3000 might be closer by the time you finish installing it. The last option is to buy a 9" housing package. It comes with housing and axles. You supply the complete center section with gears, posi, etc and a brake system. The housing with axles will only set you back about $1000. Pick up a center section from the local auto wrecker with the spline count of the axles you're going to use. 28 spline is minimum. 31 spine is common and more than strong enough. I'm not sure if you factory brakes will be a direct bolt onto the aftermarket 9" housing but they might be.

It's always amazing how people will spend $10,000 building a high HP engine then neglect the rest of the driveline because it "costs too much".

Ben,

Your need to step up to a good qualtity rear end. None of the factory rear ends are going to live long with that much power. You need to either get a 9" or 12 bolt.

You'll be in it $2500 to $3000 by the time your done. Obviously you spent lots of cash on the motor. Step up to the plate on the rear end.

If you sell that GTA rear end before it is blown up you can recoop some of the cost on your new rear end.

Are you very good at fabrication?
I think a beefed up 2nd gen rear end, with the brackets moved over, and some home made torque arm bracket would do it. Aftermarket posi, gears, axles, and a cover.
It shouldn't run you more than $1000 total. It's got the right width (close enough) and wheel bolt spacing.

I agree...I got the car as it sits for a STEAL! Problem is, the guy who built it was more into "show" than he was "go". It didn't even have sub frame connectors when I bought it! It is still a work in progress, and the rear end is next on the build list. I am selling my SCCA racer right now and dedicating the money I get from that to the Camaro. Hopefully that will sell quickly! Then a brand new 12 bolt or 9" won't be a problem!
