Lost 5th gear today
I was wondering what you guys think the problem might be.
I have a 91 Camaro RS 305. today I was doin about 60 in fourth when i shifted in to fifth and left off the clutch it just reved up like it was in nuetral. it didnt grind, make any noise or feel any different than normal and all the other gears work fine including reverse. if i put it nuetral when im goin down the road i can go in and out of the 5th gear position with out pressing the clutch. Please help

Bob Hanlon is pretty cool. I'm not totally sure his prices are the cheapest but he'll tolerate any "boneheaded" newbie questions without getting antsy, at least he did with me. Even after I admitted using a nail as a drift tool...
When you close up the case, be sure to use the right kind of RTV. Red and Copper aren't the same and mine leaked after the previous guy used red. I've heard good things about copper.
If you don't have the service manual, let me know and I can e-mail you a breakdown of the T-5 transmission for either WC or non-WC, if you'd like.

The color of RTV doesn't matter. Leaking wasn't caused by the wrong color. The fluid isn't that picky, it's color-blind in fact. Proven fact. Any leak was caused by somebody not sealing it up right.
The factory used black. Just the plain old ordinary kind; not even the high-temp type.

the snap ring popped off twice on my 89 t5. I had nearly the same conditions when mine popped. the driven 5th gear slides out of alignment on the output shaft toward the speedo gear. 5th is a slight press fit in its correct place so it won't ever slide back into place on its own.
I thought about welding the tips of the snap ring together next time.

We have seen the same problems with a lot of T-5 Cores we receive with the 5th Mainshaft Snap Ring "Popped Off". We made a provision in our Upgraded 9310 Alloy Output Shafts to install a "dual snap ring" to keep this from happening. Basically the later model 6 Cyl. Camaro's had an Electronic Speedometer Pickup behind the 5th M/S Gear. We decided to make a Steel Bushing which is cut out on the side facing the 5th Gear to encapsulate the Stock Snap Ring. On the Rear side of the bushing we used the same snap ring groove that holds the Electronic Reluctor Ring to the Mainshaft as our 2n d Snap Ring. Seems to fix the problem!
Thanks,
Tony

the only problem I had my first time (when I was 20) was that I broke the clip that holds the speedo gear to the main/output shaft. There is a tab that actually sticks down inside a hole in the shaft. I broke that off. Don't stretch the retaining rings too far either.
