Zexel Torsen posi rear differential question.
How do you tell the difference between a series 2 torsen and a series three torsen if there are no gears on them? also how do you know if your series 3 torsen is a heavy duty one that came in the SS and Firehawk cars?? Also did GM put any 3.42 gears on 2 seires torsens, cause I know you can get aftermarket gears with numerically higher gears for a 2 series carrier??
Thanx

Heavy duty?? I think you can only buy those aftermarket they didnt come stock. To the best of my knowledge 28 spline is 3 series but, i have never heard of a 2 series torsen diff before. I have a 28 spline with 373 on it so i know they should work fine.

I was under the impression that when F cars entered into SLPs shop for the treatment, the Diff was replaced with a heavier Torsen unit. I believe it was called the T-2 I think. They then sold the take outs for $100. I also know that they sold automatic cars with 2.73 ratio gears and Torsen diffs past 98. I then came to the conclusion that those units would be a 2 series due to the wide spread knowledge that any gear ratio lower than 3.08 was a 2 series carrier gear. Am I wrong here. Anyone know for sure.

I have answered my own question with a little research.
There is both a 2 series and a 3 series torsen Diff. Regular 4th Gen F-cars cars came with the Torsen T-2 differential. The three series carriers are identified like this.
First 4 numbers will be: 9022= 3 series carrier. 9032= 2 series carrier.
Ther was also a limited 9020 number for earlier F-cars, it is also a 3 series carrier.
Next two numbers are the year it was made.
Next number is the month.
Remaining letters/numbers are the serial numbers.
For instance I have one with the numbers 9032 99 7 01002
It is a 2 series built in July 1999.
The upgraded Torsens in SLP SS camaros and Firehawks are the T-2R. It has more torque biasing for performace driving. APPERENTLY I WAS WRONG.
I hope this helps other looking for this answer.

Actually with the SS upgrade, they took out the regular duty Torsen unit and replaced it with the Auburn Pro series posi. From everything I've seen and read, the T2R is only available through aftermarket suppliers. It was never put in by GM or SLP originally. You're right on the other question though. There were both 2 and 3 series Torsens put in the fourth gen cars.

Ok now your confusing me, you said 9032 was a 2 series but yours is a 9032 and you said it's a 3 series.... Maybe I missed something...

That got me curious too, so I just went out and looked at the one I got sitting on the workbench in the garage. I know for a fact that mine's a 3 series, and it has 9022 on it. It came with a set of 3.23's, and I had to remove the ring gear from the carrier, so it's definitely a 3 series.

If you auto-x, stay away from the Torsen T-2. Get the T2R.
Cornering hard and getting on the gas will cause the T-2 to act like an open diff.

Watch me come hard around the first hard corner.

I see my mistake. I listed the wrong number for my diff that I have now sold. I had a 2 series that is why I sold it. I did not catch that little typo. Thanx for the keen eye. If anyone is interested I have a few other rearend parts for sale. I might have another torsen coming up soon. here is a link:
