Transmission shopping!

So, its an 84 camaro that has recieved a 350 engine swap. I have no clue if they traded trannys at the same time or not, but this tranny is shot to heck. My grandfather has offered to rebuild it for me, but he says it will cost about $1000.

Im trying to look on ebay for a T5, but I found one for a mustang. Would this work? Are tehy acualy the same?

Go to http://www.700r4l60e.com/store/custo...&cat=19&page=1 if your grandfather can build this unit, he should be impressed with this kit. I offer free tech support on these rebuild kits. Call me if you have any questions on this.

Wow, less than $500? Sweet! Do you have one for a manual?

My mistake, I thought this was a 700R4. No, I do not have anything for the manual transmission.

Don't waste your money on a Mustang T5. They're nowhere near the same as the F-body T5. The only T5 that will work for your car is one from an 82-92 Camaro or Firebird. The shifter location is specific and they're the only T5's that are mounted tilted instead of straight up. Also make sure you get a V8 version. There's tons of 6 cylinder ones floating around out there, so make sure to avoid that pitfall. The V8 model has a 26 spline input shaft, the V6 model has a 14 spline input shaft. That's the easiest way to tell them apart. I see guys get ripped off by being sold a 6 cylinder T5 all the time on ebay and here as well. Btw, if you need a rebuild kit for one, I see them on ebay for $100-$150 a lot.

Nevermind all the advice. Just noticed your other post saying the dealer sold the car out from under you. Sorry to hear that.

4th gen v6 t5 will work with v8

By the way a 4th gen t5 for the v6 has 26 splines. They are wc and 100% compatable with 3rd gen cars. You just need the bell clutch, and the flywheel for the v8 and your good to go.

Hmmm, that's interesting. I looked up the clutch set for a 4th gen V6 and they are indeed 26 spline. I've heard that the input shaft is about 1/2" longer and you have to cut that off of the pilot of the input shaft to make them work with a thirdgen V8 setup. Also, if they have the same crappy ratios as a thirdgen V6 unit, it still wouldn't be worth running behind a V8. If they have the same close ratios as the V8 ones, it wouldn't be so bad to use.
