Auburn or eaton differential.

I am looking into geting either an Eaton or an Auburn posi differential. I need everyones opinion on which is better.
Also, what GM vehicles came with these differentials already installed from the factory. I am looking to swap it in.

Come on guys somebody has to have experience in these two diffs. Or has anyone heard of a true track style diff that came in an S10? I have a pic but I don't know how to post it.

Take the poll!!

My eaton broke in less than 1 year taking the gears with it, and I don't have that much power.
I'd go Torsen T2R (this is more for auto-x/road racing though) or Auburn Pro.

T2R for RR, AX, accept no substitutes! If you are drag racing then get whatever is popular with them, probably the eaton.

What was the Torsen HD version that SLP sold? Is that the T2R?

- there's a couple of people who have had problems with the auburn's from day 1 of getting them. - I vote for the True-Trac torsional.

Nope! This is a much better unit. Kicks the True-trac in the dust, I ran that on my CMC car and removed it as soon as I could as I was still experiencing a lot of wheelspin on one side with that unit.

I didn't know there were so many options for posi units! I am looking mainly for staight line pure unadulterated traction. I do still want to make some turns without the tires complaining. What vehicles did all these rears come in? I see an Ebay auction for a true track style diff that came from an s10.
I can't really afford a new one right now.

99-02 fbodies that had posi got Torsens. In 96-98 only SS/WS6 got Torsens. 93-96 Z28/Trans Am had auburns.

Wow,
It looks like I should have added torsen diffs to the poll list.

Cross fire Z,
So what your saying is 93-96 posi 4th gens had Auburn diffs. 96-98 SS and WS6 cars got Torsens and all 98-02 posi cars got Torsens. What did the cars that were posi rear but not SS or WS6 get in 96-98? Also which of these different rears had the best posi unit in terms of traction and life? When you say some had Auburn diffs, were these the same ones that they sell to the public or did the General work out a deal for some lower quality higher quantity pieces?

What about the S series truck that share the same differentials as the F cars? Did any of them have better differentials? Maybe the Olds Bravada got something special cause it was an AWD SUV.

Any body have pictures of these different posi carriers or maybe an easy way to tell them apart??

Thanx guys!!

Ok, let me clear this up, and read the years closely.

93-98 f-bodies that had posi (but not SS/WS6) got auburns, and from what I know it was a lower grade then the pro series. Yes, 98 got the auburn even though it was an LS1. It was the last year for the auburn. 96-98 SS/WS6 f-bodies got the torsens. 99-02 got torsens regardless if it was an SS/WS6 or not. If it had a posi and was 99-02 it was a zexel torsen.

As for the posi in trucks and blazers and such, I do not know. I have no idea what posi units they received.

A zexel: http://home.earthlink.net/~deton8r/i...exeltorsen.jpg

An auburn: http://home.wi.rr.com/montecarloss/I...urnProPosi.jpg

The two are easy to tell apart.

S10s have 10bolt rears yea, but apparently most commonly got the dreaded gov-lock. Avoid it like the plaugue.

Not other vehicles would have a donor posi for you. So you're basically stuck searching 3rd and 4th gens. (Remember to match the spline count)

So Sonix, Your saying that the Eaton Gov-loc diff is a P.O.S? That's the one with the huge finger looking thing that drops into the teeth and kinda locks the two sides into place? It's failure prone or when it locks it's very apparent?

Did the monte carlo or the regals have the same rear size as ours?

No, they didn't. 10 bolt, but 8.2" IIRC.

Yea, the gov-lock, aka grenade lock is a POS. Do a search on it here and you'll see how much everyone seems to love them. It locks *after* you're two axles have different amounts of power, causing a grenade like reaction.

The visual description you gave kinda sounds like a normal posi though, the center finger (cross pin), and it's between the spider gears... I've actually never seen a gov-lock, only heard of it, so I don't know if that's what it looks like.

Google rules!

http://www.astrosafari.com/images/re...Install006.jpg

Montes and Regals do not have torque arms, therefore, they do not have a bracket for it. The axle won't work. Also, I think they are 8.5". Well either way, they are not 7.5/7.625" axles.
