Pilot bushing - can it shrink so the input shaft won't fit?

Hey guys,

I'm dealing with some tranny issues as of late, and I'm thinking it has something to do with my pilot bushing. I pulled the tranny out, and it slid out easy enough, but when I tried to put it back in, it wouldn't slide in without torqueing it in with the four bolts that connect to the bellhousing.

I also tried to slide TWO clutch alignment tools into it - neither would slide in..they had to be more or less hammered in, and were almost impossible to pull out.

What gives? I've heard of these things wearing over time to the point that they're much larger than they originally were....but shrinking?

that sounds just like a problem me and a buddy had with his car, if the bushing is bad, it should be changed. check your clutch disc, make sure the springs are facing the flywheel. the place that manufactored the disc he got labeled the disc wrong

Ok, as far as my post - scratch that. I just dropped the bellhousing and clutch. I placed the clutch tool directly into the pilot bushing and it's looser than a ten cent wh0re. I'll be picking a new one up tomorrow, chucking it in the freezer tomorrow night, and putting this piece back together on Saturday. Hope this takes car of my problem...

I know, I shouldn't have to. But I sat there for 30 min and it wouldn't slide in for the life of me. Pretty sure I had it aligned as best as it could be too.

The only thing I'm thinking is that the pilot bushing was so worn that the input shaft was gouging into the side of it...
