I've recently noticed a whine at top of first gear. Not really much more to say, if the engine is above a certain RPM and still in 1st gear it will whine. Under normal driving with casual shifts, the whining starts about 1 second before the transmission shifts into second. It increases with engine speed, then goes away as soon as it shifts. If I increase speed until whining starts, then let off and HOLD the engine speed and car speed right at the point where the whining starts, the whining will hold steady until I either slow down, or the car shifts. Any ideas? Are my 700R4's days possibly numbered?

Is there anything else you can tell me? The whining is somewhat soft, for example if I am having an average volume conversation with the person next to me we both probably wouldnt notice it. Can it checked out by a dealership?

 

If you take it somewhere, they can listen and make a guess. Only way to know for sure is to disassemble and inspect. Disassembly is not practical. I saw a worn case bushing cause a whine in a unit. Pumps tend to whine when failing also. A pump, if need be, can be swapped without complete disassembly. Let a local pro hear it and let you know.

 

my TH350 does the exact same thing. Been doing it ever since I put it in the car (1.5 years ago). Its seen thousands of street miles and hundreds of 12-11 second passes. Never skips a beat.... if it aint broke I ain't fixing it.
