Disc brakes or drum brakes, makes no difference. Once the brake drum or rotor is removed everything esle is the same.

You do not need to have someone keep it in gear while you watch...all you need to do is put it in gear and rev it up then put it in nuetral and get out and watch the wheel spin...
If you have a wobble then it is the axle shaft and it will need replacing. Keep in mind that when you have the car up on jackstands that you should not have any movement of the axle shaft, rotating the wheel forward and backward should give you an idea of grinding/drag and you should be listening too.

A little in and out movement is normal for a c clip axle. If it has an Auburn differential then the axle end play will increase as the cones in the differential wear.

Re: How to replace wheel bearings (10 bolt)

Why did you order a new axle? Is yours bent or worn where the axle bearing runs on it?

When you remove the cover you will be able to tell which differential you have.

Ouch...

Some questions seem better left unasked, once you have the answer. Too bad there's no way to know that in advance.
