10 Bolt Car or Truck Master Overhaul kit
This master overhaul kit for a 10 bolt Chevy ring and pinion.
This kit containing Timken bearings & races, shims and other parts need in rebuilding your 10 bolt rearend gears. You need this kit when installing new gear in your car or pickup truck. Our kits have ring gear bolts also! This kit is your choice of the following cars or trucks!
Kit Contains Following!
Pinion Bearings & Races
Carrier Bearings & Races
Pinion Seal
Carrier Shims (unlike most kits)
Pinion Depth Shims (unlike most kits)
Gear Marking Compound W/Brush
Rear End Gasket
Pinion Nut & Washer
Crush Sleeve
Lock Tite
from how they arranged the letters in the item description i'd guess you have a set of pinion shims and a set of carrier shims. yes you have to set the carrier. whatever shim thickness you have can not be changed, what you can and may have to do is change how the shims are arranged. posting links to ebay is pretty worthless in few weeks since it won't last. copy and paste so the info will always be around when someone does a search later.

Car: Yes
Engine: Usually
Transmission: Sometimes
Axle/Gears: Behind me somewhere
If all you're doing is changing the carrier, you don't need to touch anything at all about the pinion.
Measure the thickness of your current shims; put back in the same total thickness, distributed as required on either side to produce the correct backlash.

Yea i tried to just swap the carrier and bearings and use the old thickness shims. It seems like the pinion depth is to low because it makes a chatter when I turn it and the wear patteren test shows it starting at the bottom with full contact and tappers off by the time it reaches the top. does any one know the exact spec for pinion depth on these??
Thanks

what are you doing and do you know what you're doing? if you swap carriers you don't need to touch the pinion and the pinion depth doesn't need checked or reset. on a lot of gear sets the pinion depth is etched on the pinion. the pinion shim size changes from casting to casting to make up for differances in the housings. if you only changed the carrier set the back lash to spec and you should be good. the contact pattern is pretty subjective and about the least important thing you have to worry about.

Yea im trying to rebuild the rear and install a new carrier using the old gears. my backlash is about .005 and in order to get a semi normal wear pattern i had to add a .010 shim to the pinion shaft. the back lash is nice and tight and it feels like its ready to go. Is it normal for the pinion and ring gear to make a little noise while spinning it? almost lke little tinking noise when you spin it forward. how do i know the pinion nut is on tight enough?

you screwed up big time, you didn't need to touch the pinion if you never changed gear sets. put the original shim back in. by any chance do you have the wrong carrier series? all you needed to do was swap the ring gear to the new carrier, set back lash and you'd been done. the contact pattern isn't too important and is way too subjective to have a lot of meaning, but it's a good check that things aren't too far off. then again if it's set up to spec it won't be. i've never seen a bad contact pattern when all the numbers were right. you set the pinion preload to 25 in/lbs, that's how you know the nut is tight enough. you didn't buy a new nut or crush sleeve did you? if not go buy one of each and start over.

That sucks.. I messed with it for 12hrs trying to get the numbers right. The thing is Right now its the tighest backlash and least noisy of all the times i tried it. The deal with the pinion was this.. i bought a so called good rear off ebay from a 89 gta w posi. got it home opened it and it was an open rear with 3:73 so i imeditatly relized someone had messed with it. Who knows if the gears were even set right to begin with. So then i bought a zexel some 28 spline axles put the gears on it and got the text book out and this is were i am now. So i guess tommorow i will go to napa buy a solid sleeve and nut and try again. The weird thing was every one said to torque it around 100-150 and thats about were the 22lbs was.. well i got the 22In/lbs around 70ft/lb for some reason.

go to GM parts for a new nut and crush sleeve, NAPA won't have a nut or sleeve, GM won't have a solid spacer. tighten the pinion nut untill you have around 25 in/lbs of preload, that's without the carrier installed. you need a dial type torque wrench to test the preload.
