Loose input shaft on a t-5 borg???

Loose input shaft on a t-5 borg???
hi my input shaft of my stock borg wargner t-5 off my trans am gta 1989 has a loose un and down...maybe 1/4 inches seems alot to me...is it normal what is the tolerances? i have no loose foward and backward just up and down...i removed the front cover with the cone bearing and it don'st seems worn off... its shimmed , should i shimmed it tighter?

No you should not do anything.
There is no particular tolerance spec. It can only wobble just so far, before the clutch gear hits the inside of the clutch gear bearing retainer.
It is completely normal.
The reason the clutch gear wobbles is because it only has one bearing holding it to the case, and one bearing holding it to the mainshaft. So if the mainshaft moves, the clutch gear can move. Likewise, the mainshaft only has one bearing holding it to the case, and that one bearing that connects it to the clutch gear.
When installed, the tip end of the clutch gear is held from wobbling by the pilot bearing in the back of the crank; and the back end of the mainshaft is supported by the yoke which is then supported by the extension hosuing bushing. Without all that in place, the 2 shafts are free to wobble a pretty good bit.

best thing to do is to pull the input shaft and look at the end of the main shaft, where the input rides on it. If it's smooth and round, don't get to excited. If its gouged or tapered or out-of-round....you need a mainshaft.
excessive is usually enough to hit the retainer, where the trow-out rides.

well i have removed the front cover...
and the bering seems fine...but i would'nt goo any further... im not comfortable to tear apart a transmission...can you calculate an excessive loose ??? my input shaft is brand new from last year...complete rebuilt at a transmission shop...but no more warranty...

Slip the drive shaft yoke in the rear of the trans and see what happens to the "loose".
That should give you a clue as to why all this "loose" doesn't matter.

Transmission: t-5, alum DS
Axle/Gears: 3.42 torsen posi, baer discs
1/4"play is way too much! the input shaft should spin free in neutral with no endplay and no wobble...otherwise you have a problem : bearing race, bearing...not sure unless you look in.

THE MAINSHAFT IS TOAST! Or the needle bearings inside of the input shaft are worn.
Wait a minute. Were the needle bearings there when you pulled the input shaft out?
