A TH400 would be a 3 speed auto. 400 standing for 400 HP. Mostly for heavy duty application in trucks. And probably only big block appications. It's been around since 1964.
the TH2004R (for some reason they put the R behind the 4, maybe to keep from getting the 2 mixed up) standing for 200 HP with overdrive. Would have been used for smaller rear drive engines.
The TH700R4 they changed the HP ratings. 700 divided by 2 = 350, so it's rated at 350HP. Used in most rear drive cars and trucks since around 1980.

The 2004r was made for light cars and the 700r4 was made to push around big chunks of steel.
700r4=350hp, my a$$!!!
They would burn up in no time behind sluggy 180hp 305's!

I'm just stating how they named/rated the GM auto trans'. That's just what that number designates. The TH350 was rated/used with/however decided by corporate, at 350 HP. when the TH700R4 came out, it replaced the TH350 by adding an overdrive. See the similarity.
It's like when "THEY" state engine HP and torque specs. Is that actually what the HP is? You can get 500 different answers and opinions on different ratings from 500 different people.
And how YOU take care of YOUR equipment is directly proportional to the life expectancy of it.

its all rated on torque capacity that the tranny is prepped for. I dont remeber the TH700R4's maximum specs but its fairly strong. More than enough to hold up your 305, just stay away from stock t-5's if you go swap, a stock 305 tpi can snap one in half. Aftermarket ones are fine. Though if you look at the gear ratios on the 700r4 on the first link it seems to have a fairly wide split between first and second.

Just stating how "AUTO" transmissions got there number designations.
TH350 rear wheel drive 3 speed
TH250 rear wheel drive 3 speed
TH200 rear wheel drive 3 speed
TH700R4 rear wheel drive with overdrive
TH2004R rear wheel drive with overdrive
TH125 Front wheel drive 3 speed
Th440 Front wheel drive with overdrive 220HP rating
TH400 Rear wheel drive 3 speed
If designated with "C" at the end example TH350C indicates lockup converter clutch.

Lets put this one back on track before it turn into a pizzing match.
If the pan has 16 bolts and is basically square, it is a 700r4. How good or bad any of gm transmissions are have been debated for years. Some guys pop them behind 200 hp stuff and some of us have run more power than they shoud hope to handle with no issues. Carry on.

i have a 350 i m putting in my 1991 camaro rs and i want to keep it throttle body so i could use my wiring harnes but i have a limited amout of money about 1500 so i cant afford to buy fuel injection products with all the other thigs i had to but so i will use a used one that i will probably find at a junk yard off a truck and then bore it out and get a bigger fuel pump will it work?

Re: what is my transmission?????
It's a 700-R4, aka 4L60. (similar to but not the same as 4L60E, the electronically-controlled version) GM changed the name for it in about 88 or 89, but the world at large was slow to adopt the new one.

Re: what is my transmission?????
You seem you might be able to answer my question. I have an 84 z28 and my roomate just bought a 91 rs v6. We plan on putting in a sbc so any tips would be appreciated. Anyway the question is this, do you know the different types of 700r4's? we have an unknown 350 in a truck so when we get a donor car (transmission) we need to know what id tag to look for so it will match to to 350. thx
Apologies if this is not the correct method to ask you. Im new to this stuff
