How much slip yoke visible?

I was checking out my ujoints last night and saw that my slip yoke was wiggeling up and down in the tranny along with my ujoint. How much of the slip should be visible(sticking out of tranny)?I may either buy a new slip yoke or have the d sahft lengthened. This is on a 700r4.

I have about 1/2" of clean(shiny) metal and 1-1/2" left of dirty metal slipyoke left. When I push on the slip yoke it moves side to side and up and down.If I push the slip in a bit then it's nice and snug.I was thinking of having the d shaft lengthened about 1/2".

thats a bad idea because there is about 3" of that slip yoke already in the transmissoon and if you make the dirveshaft longer you can put pressure on the rev. pistons in the case and blow out the transmisison i have seenit happen 2 or 3 times... your best be is go get a 7/16 remove the drive shadr and look at the splines in the slip yoke you make just have to repalce the slip yoke its self... that would only be liek $5 at a junk yard and the cost of a new u-joint

I would rather not lengthen it anyway as I want an aluminum one.I am getting the paly(side to side,up and dow) with the d-shaft installed.I know the tailshaft is supposed to have a little play when the d0shaft isn't installed so I was thinking either a new slip yoke or the bushing that goes in the tailshaft. The splines in the slip are all straight and normal looking.

now your thinking the right way... again best thign to do is pull the drive shaft out and take a look no point in guessing

It is out.The slip looks to be good but I don't know if it could just be worn just enough to cause the play.

now what i would do it take a 9/16 wench and take off the TQ arm and the tail shaft houseing so you could see the race that is in there for the slip yoke... if you have a mic mic ou tthe the end ofthe slip yoke and the parts where its rused and see how much of a different there is

Now is the bushing (race) inside the tailhousing(will it come off with the housing)or will it still be on the tranny?I don't have a mic but I will just replace it anyway, only a few bucks.I searched but can't find where the bushing is exactly.Thank you for the info by the way.

the race is in the tail shaft houseing... one you remove the houseing the race will still be preshed intot he houseing... its a pressed on bushing so if you odj't have the right tools to remove and install it your gogi to have to go the junk yard and get a used one or go to a trans shop and see if they will press oen on for you give em a littlle bit of time and i will look on the net to see if i can find you a pic of it

Sweet, thanks.I will either go buy the tool or take it to a tranny shop.I'm going to yank the housing tonight and stick the slip into it and see if there is any space in between the bushing and slip.

The previous owner said he replaced the tranny mount cause was thumping on hard shifts and there is a dent on the tranny hump where it was hitting.I think the race is going to be shot.

well with that being said yes that race is shot... once your pinion angal is off that much it won't take that much time before that race goes out...

a buddy of mine has a 89 GMC full size jimmy sitting on 36" super swampers with 8" spring lift and 4" block lift he didn't reset his rear pinion angal and he worn out the race so bad that when the race went all the way down to metal the yoke and race froze together and snaped all 4 bolt tabs off the houseing and then the drive shaft pulled out on him..... now keep in mine this happen to him on the highway doing about 60mph....

i say you should check that out as soon as you can man.
