9 bolt vs 10 bolt

I have a 10 bolt cover rear axle with a 272(?) open rear with drum brakes. I would like to have a 3:42 posi with discs. After searching the forums, I haven't quite come up with the answers I need.

Is there a swap-in Pontiac rear end that could be bolted in place of mine?

Other than a proportioning valve, will the stock power brake booster handle the rear discs?

Are there any other issues that might come up?

Is the stock Pontiac rearend good enough or should I look for something aftermarket to handle about 350 rwhp?

If any one has experience in making this swap, I'd sure like to hear about it-I hate having to fix things more than once!

Thanks, this a really great website!!!

All diffs from third gens are the same. You can even bolt in a fourth gen diff however it's wider by 2" on each side. The 9 bolt and 10 bolt are direct bolt ins. The only difference is internally. 9 bolt parts are also expensive and hard to find.

Yes. The booster doesn't care what kind of brakes you have.

How strong it is depends on many factors. V6's have broken diffs on the street and I've had a beefed up 10 bolt running into the mid 11's.
