Whining noise coming from the rear end at speed
At about 10mph a small whining noise comes out of the axle and the faster i get , bigger is the sound . It sounds like a plane at highway speed . It's a 89 bird LO3 with 700r4 and 2.73 gear .
Is it the wheel bearings or the internal bearings?

My rear whined with speed - higher pitch at higher speeds - it was the pinion bearing in the rear end. Not a hard replacement - remove drive shaft from rear, move it aside (but leave it in the tranny unless you want a tranny fluid bath), and go from there.
Make sure you mark the driveshaft so you get it back right - bolting it back the same way makes a difference in balance.
Get the solid pinion spacer instead - to replace the crush sleeve (you can search here for the part number - I think they can be had from Summit).
And get a brand new pinion nut, they aren't supposed to be reused. Any parts store will have it.

No problem - I hope that's all it is for you - it's a cheap fix and easily done in the driveway. Email me if you need anything else - I may not know, but I'll gladly try!

a "scraping" sound - gears would be more of a whining sound - maybe the rear brakes - I'd check brakes first before I started tearing into the rear.

I sounds more like a rubbing sound than a scraping sound. Have you ever been in a car and heard the sound of the tires rubbing on the ineer fender well? It sounds exactally like that, the brakes are newly redone with new crossed drilled rotors

OK - rubbing sound might be rear then - a very low pitched "whining" - like when your tire runs over the yellow line onto those grooves in the pavement to wake you up!

I'm no expert at all ... but I know my whining rear was pinion, and it was an easy fix so I tried it myself and was successful. Does the sound change pitch with speed? You could try pinion bearing as well - it's not hard to do, and way cheaper to replace than having the rear tore into by a shop.
Is it a 4th gen rear by chance? If so, you might wanna register and post question on a 4th gen board - they would know more about the 4th gen rears - they change to zexel-torsion diff's in the 4th gen line somewhere - a whole new posi beast. The only part of a rear I'll venture into is the pinion bearing, and removal of the c-clips for wheel bearings - beyond that it's time for a pro in my book.

i just took my car to the shop on wednesday and i was told it was the pinion bearing making that noise... it got worse and worse and i finally parked it. planning on rebuilding the whole car so hopefully i can just go ahead and buy a whole new rear end but just wanted to let you know that a few other people agree that that sound came from a bad pinion bearing.
