What you bought is a truck part. It is not a limited slip "posi" differential like a regular high performance car would have, it is a governed locking differential.

From an online article,

"The Gov-Loc is an automatic locker designed for use in government (military) vehicles. This unit is actually a limited slip that acts like a locker. It is the optional Iimited slip/locker available in most GM trucks. It's better suited for wet weather and snow because it usually loses its guts (literally) when confronted with heavy off-road use. It uses springs and centrifugal weights to activate its locking mechanism. If there is too much differentiation between the two wheels (axleshafts) during torque input (throttle), the unit will increase its bias until it reaches full-lock mode. Unfortunately this usually happens with a bang when too much throttle and large tires are involved. For serious off-road use it might be a better idea to use a different locker. We've driven a borrowed Gov-Loc-equipped vehicle on the street and found it to handle no different than an open differential. The truck didn't have a lift and had the stock "

congratulations you just bought yourself a time bomb(grenade lok) lol

the grenade lock put power to both shafts after 100 rpm difference between them

IE it is governed

posi puts power to wheel that has traction

open puts power to wheel that is slipping

gov lok is the right idea, but is weak

chevy didnt have the good old clutch type posi unit since the early 70s

dana used good strong lock units

POWR-LOK in chevies and TRAK-LOK in jeeps and such

all the same G80 code

No-Spin in the eaton axles(least common)

good luck

Bummer dude....

That's a REAL EASY deal to pass up. IMO it's not a good deal for $5, let alone $100. Sorry to hear that you got taken in by it.

I wouldn't put that thing in anything with any power that has to run on pavement. It won't survive. On top of being fragile, it isn't real driveable in situations like wet streets going around corners. Its "governor" action causes unusual surprises for the driver. Surprises are bad.

My advice would be, to put it back on ebay, and let it go for whatever it goes for; hopefully you'll at least mostly recover your loss. Then forget about it and chalk it up to the general ebay experience; which is, that it's probably the ultimate "buyer beware" environment. If you don't already know what it is that you're buying, DON'T BUY IT. Which in this case, if you'd done the research beforehand instead of after the deed is already done, you probably would have been spared this potentially expensive lesson.

if its so bad could i just weld it up then like a one legger. all i needed was a series 3 carrior for the gears i got and its only a drag strip car ,no interior just slicks , cassis work and raw power w/ a little bottle (250 shot ) if it wont hold ill sell it again but if i can weld it ill do that.

I wouldn't weld that, it has a lot of parts in it. A 3 series open would have cost you like $10. You could weld that if you had to.

Bad bad bad bad bad for the strip. Even welded. And not very good either. Especially with slicks. I doubt it will survive a single full pass.

The way it works, is that no slip-limiting action occurs, until AFTER the wheels have already begun spinning. It's not like a posi. It is an open while sitting still, and then AFTER wheel spin begins, it locks up with a bang.

Look at how little metal there is around that big "window" where the governor weights are. That's part of how they break; that entire end of the carrier breaks right off.

Find the S truck forum, post a message on there about it, see what the people who have them have to say about it. I am "positive" (pun intended) you'll figure out that you don't really want it in your car.

Sell it, quick while it's still intact and there's hope of finding someone that doesn't know or care what it is, or just wants his stock S truck back after he tore his up, before it tears up and becomes altogether worthless.
