How to tell the year of a trans?

Well as some of you guys may know i have just picked up another 84Z, i may just strip it and junk it or gut it and use it for a weekend fun car.

Anyways to the point...

It seems this car has been monkey'd around with a bit and im wondering if theirs any easy way to tell if its the original 700R4 in the car or if its a newer one thats been swapped in.

89 and later models have a big "A" shaped casting mark next to the cooler ports. Earlier models are harder to identify without breaking open the trans. Of course, you can always get the id number off the trans and find out that way.

Axle/Gears: '01 3.42 10 bolt
82-early84 v-8's had a small front pump bushing and 27 spline input shaft like the v-6's. late 84-86, the v-8 went to 30 spline input shaft and big front pump bushing. early 87 had the rainbow shaped casting mark by the cooler line fittings but no feed hole for govener gear lube in the back. late 87-up had the govener gear lube feed hole. without the casting numbers on the panrail of the case, this will get you close without tearing the unit down.

Take the pan off and look for the auxiliary valve body, it would be a good excuse to change the fluid and filter.

The julian date is on the metal tag on the side of the case. Example: 87040 = made on the 40th day of 1987

I saw something stamped right by the edge of the bellhousing when i was under there changing the cooler lines yesterday. i never bothered to write them down though.

The filter in it is probably the original, ill be rebuilding the trans to put into the other camaro soon so a few more miles wont kill it... hopefully

theres a date on 700r4's

on the stamping code the first digit is last number of the year of the trans
