another tranny issue
alright heres my issue, i just installed a replacement transmission from a 91 suburban, i don't have the crossmember back in yet cause it needs a fabbing, well i took it for a drive all the gear selections work, but when i am on the gas the rpms are really high, they seem to be right for the speed, but the rpms don't drop until i get off the gas like its not shifting or its slipping or something, not sure
i'm not sure if i adjusted the TV correctly, i was having problems with it, could this be the cause, or is it something more serious

so i was just trying to adjust the TV cable, well i'm thinking its not adjusted all the way, i can't seem to slide it any farther, but when i WOT it, it does not ratchet and the cable is loose and sloppy and so is the adjuster in its bracket

is this going into a fbody? if so you might need to get a new tv cable. you shouldnt need to fab the crossmember just use the tallshaft housing off your old tranny. and low tranny fluid can cause some of your problems.

yes on all counts. the tv cable is probably worn out/ stretched to it's limit. dealer has them pretty reasonable if i remember correctly. most tranny parts stores will have them. i don't know if regular auto parts stores will carry them or not. it is either that or you didn't get the cable connected at the tranny. low fluid will cause it to have low pressure. both will be contributing factors to the symptoms you describe.

thanks guys
number one on the list is going to be to get the tranny fluid at the right level, i'll try again on the TV cable i have, if not i'll prob. have to buy one, is that an easy install, it seems like it would be simple, but sometimes those are the tougher ones

also, i added almost 6 quarts of ATF and it still doesn't touch the dipstick and none is dripping and nothing fresh is on the ground
could you please shed some light for me

the auto tranny holds 16 quarts total. so i would keep putting atf into it until its full while the engine is warm and running. take the car for a ride then check it again. seeing how the tv cble isnt set right you could just back it up a bit then drive forward a few feet. this would ake sure the valve body has fluid in the valves.

are you sure the dipstick tube is in all the way? did you get the crossmember in? if not then the tranny has to be sagging some and probably messing up the reading on the dipstick.

it could be that your tranny cooler lines are leaking or like 87zjeff said the dip stick tube isnt fully seated in the tranny housing. otherwise could be trannypan gasket. but likly cooler or dipstick tube. goodluck and hope you sort it out.

If you have slipped the trans even a couple times by running it way low on fluid you have already damaged it. How much you damaged it is the question. I ran a trans 3 or 4 qts low by accident with leaking cooler lines and the trans died within 100 miles even after only having put a few miles on it before fixing the leak and refilling to capacity.

I only drove around the block a few times when I damaged my trans by slipping it because it was low on fluid. If you do indeed have a 30 day warranty, get your leak fixed, now, get your TV adjusted properly, and put as many hard miles on the trans before the warranty is up as you can to see how it does.

i have one tranny thats used in my work ford work truck with a 460 that i burnt second gear. with the fords you can adjust the band. with 2 quarts of lucas tranny fix it lasted 40K miles driving it hard after i burnt it. if there is something wrong with it, it will show up real quick so after it gets moving. i would drive it as much as possible to make shure it going to be alright.
