Strange 12 bolt whine

I recently had my mechanic install a new strange 12 bolt rearend / 3.42 gears in my 89 GTA.. Whenever i drive now the rear whines, is this normal? i know gears are supposed to have a little whining too them but how loud should it be cuz? it s not really loud, but u do have to talk a little louder to be heard. Also all the sound dampening crap and carpet is gone in the back so i know that makes it a little louder . also ive put about 175 miles on it so far and the noise hasnt become any louyder, just remained constant, any help is appreciated

Does it do all the time? Or only at certian speed? What kind of gears? Richmond gears are a little noisy, i think there cut from factory that way plus you get what you pay for I think they are cheaper. I had some 4'11s richmond gears in my t-type years ago, i set them up prefect or as good as it gets, and they made a little noise. As long as there not to loud and getting louder i'd say your pretty safe other wise i'd say you got problems. You can try GM's rear end additive it helps with the noise sometimes. just got to any GM dealer an ask for it only 10 bucks and it works. Plus it might be a good idea to drain the fuild anyway since you've put about 175 miles on it and broke them in. At least thats what i would do.

stranges website says all their gears are either Strange or Motive (Italian) Performance , but the sound isnt getting louder its constant, and im gonna wait and change the fluid at 1000 miles, since strange recommends waiting 1000 miles.

I put a complete 12 bolt Mosar (3:73) under my 89 TA and you honestly CAN'T talk to each other without yelling. They said it was common. I kept complaining and they sent me another gear set (charged me) and I tried it. NO difference. I tried to talk to them about it but they were not interested in talking to me. There is no way that it is common to be this loud. They sent me another set of gears and on the bottom of the pinion gear someone wrote f*** Y** with white out. I called them and thanked them. I will never do business with them again.

I installed a Currie 9" in my 84 Z28 and they howled something fierce. They sent me two differant punkins with the same results. Finley I sent the whole rear end assy. back to them. They redid the unit and sent it back to me at no cost and it was quite! About 6 months later it developed a low speed pinion whine which I lived with. Then I went to the "Rock" in Wis. I had slicks and hit the button right off the line and made around six passes (best 12.62/111.92). On the way home the dam thing began to whine and just got louder and louder. I think where they mount the torque arm to the housing will cause the rearend housing to twist on hard launches and throw the tooth pattern off. It got so bad I could't stand it so I sold it to a drag racer (open headers). Now these rearends arn't cheap and for what you pay for them they should be as quite as a mouse.

My problem was the fact that Mosar wanted nothing to do with helping me solve this. I finally asked the guy on the phone if I was just stuck with it and he said yes. I said "so you know what I spent and you know the problem I'm having and you're telling me there's nothing you can do. Again, he said yes. I told him, if this is such a common problem (they say) then why do they not warn you BEFORE you shell out all that money. He didn't really want to address that. I told him before I hung up that I guess I'm just stuck with it and I thanked him for Mosar's wonderful customer service. He said "oh ok". He couldn't have cared less and over the course of several months I talked to many different people with the same result. Thats why everything on my racecar is from Mark Williams.

its sad to say but sometime it's best to seach for factory used gears pick out you ratio and go from there. It's something with the way after market markers machine the gear sets.
