Might not be an easy gasket to find. Like everything else 9 bolt, parts are hard to come by. I just cleaned mine up real well and sealed it with RTV.

I have yet to see one yet that was not painted. sighn of a rebuild? that's funny
RTV is for areas where gaskets can't be used (corners and small areas) RTV can get in to threaded holes and since it does not compress like air and it ends up in uneven thightening and broken bolts (I perfer gaskets but, have done the RTV thing too

My 9 bolt is not painted red on the inside just plain cast. Also advance auto sales the gasket specifically a felpro part # RDS55390 and it 6.24. It will ship in one day to most places.

Owner's manual for my 88 calls for special lube for the axle in the 5.7 L98and 5.0 LB9 engined cars, which I assume is the 9 bolt rear. Use GM part number 1050010 or equal with no additives. Don't know what this stuff is but that number is different that what's used in the other gears.

For what its worth all the disc brake 9 bolts I have opened up have been red epoxy coated with the yellow paint on the ring gear. The one drum brake I opened up was not coated. I dunno if its just a fluke but thats what I saw. Mind you the drum brake was the oldest one I have had (87) but one of the disc version was 87 as well and coated so???
DONT put posi additive in the 9 bolt its a cone type and does not require friction modifiers like a clutch type does. It wont hurt it but I have heard it can aid in wearing out the cones quicker ( like they dont wear fast anyway ) I am still running a 9 bolt in my Players car and put in Castrol synthetic and its running fine no additive.

I changed the grease in my 50,000 mile Iroc with disc brakes recently, no red inside the housing at all, just plain casting. I got my cover gasket straight from GM,,,part # is 12523445. Larry.

Yeah, luck of the draw is for sure, the inside of mine is just cast. Nothing special.
I also got my gaskets from GM, had em next day, $11cdn.
When I first got the car I dropped in good ole canadian tire army grade gear oil and some posi additive.
The second time around I had GM do the change (once was enough for me, stinks to high heaven...)
I had GM just put in synthetic gear oil and no additives this time around.
As far as I know the additive was only supposed to be added to the 10 bolts with the clutch packs inside, not the cone style posi's. Even the service manual doesn't specify whether to use additive or not on the 9 bolt.
However, synthetics generally last longer between changes, dont need an additive from the start(usually) and can reduce friction a little better than the conventional oils. But they can also find places to leak from.

Got my gasket at Autozone, Felpro part, was about 11 bucks for it. I started stripping mine down to repaint it and the main housing was orange and still had the blue inspection mark on it, but the tubes were black.

9 bolt
Yep I noticed some paint inspection marks on my housing also. Mine also has a factory decal or sticker on the cover, can't quite make out all of the writing but kinda neat that it's still there. I also noticed the Iroc still has the factory Bilstein shocks on it with stickers still intact also along with tags still on the coil springs too. These low mileage cars are pretty neat in that respect.
Something else I did to the 9 bolt that I didn't like was that stupid little rubber plug in the cover, it's the fill hole. But I knew the rubber plug was going to be a source for seepage so I removed it and welded a bung on, tapped it and installed a pipe plug. I thought the rubber plug was kinda cheasey. Larry.
