98 4L60E Code 1870 How Do I Fix It?
What do I need to do to fix the code 1870 in a 4l60e? It is in my girlfriend's 98 v6 camaro. I don't want to have to rebuild the entire tranny. I was thinking more of a shift kit or a correction kit. What has everyone else done with this problem? Thanks guys.
Also about 3 weeks ago the tranny got to where the tc will not stay locked in when it is warm. It locks and unlocks, locks, unlocks. We replaced the tc lockup clutch selonoid and it didn't fix it. Could it be caused by the same problem that causes the code 1870?
Thanks guys

Car: 86 trans am
Engine: 350
Transmission: T 56
After the car is really warm and you are driving in town does it have a really hard 1-2 shift?
If it does than you probably need to have the valve body bored with a new reg valve installed.
I do a lot of these repairs. No need to rebuild the trans
now if after the pan is removed there is excessive metal or the fluid is badly burnt than the trans will require rebuilding.

Well we had the transmission flushed right after it happened. That is what a family friend that works for a dealership advised us to do first. After that it hasn't came back up. It just started doing what I described earlier with the tc locking up and unlocking, lock, unlock, lock, unlock. I was wondering if the problems could be related.
I thought about trying to get the shift correction kit from superior or a shift kit from Transgo. The superior kit claims to fix the 1870 problem. I just hope that that fixes the lockup problem.

The 1870 code is a trans component slip code. Basicly the torque converter is not locking up 100% at cruising speed. The easiest way to test it is to hook up a scanner and watch the amount of rpm's the converter is slipping. On normal acceleration it will lock up with only 5-10 rpm slip. However, at cruising speed, when letting off of the throttle and then getting back on it the converter will slip slightly (300-500 rpm's usually). Gm has an updated valve body and as far as I know this is the only fix for the problem. This problem is more common on Blazers, Suburbans and pickups though. Haven't really seen very many in Firebirds though. and it is difficult to diagnos the problem over the internet.
EDIT: Problems with the firebird transmissions I have seen have been with pressure control solenoids, so if you do anything with the valvebody, be sure to replace this as it doesn't cost very much and will save you the trouble of pulling the pan down again.
