shift rail assembly question

with the cover off looking directly at the shift forks, should you be able to see the flat on the end (towards the front of the transmission) of the shift rail or should it face the inside of the cover?

I understand what you're saying but I don't see why it matters. The shift pin has to go into the fork lever stuff and can only do so one way. Don't look at the flat you're looking at. Look at the forks and make sure all that is working.

Yes you should be able to see it. You don't have an option as to where it faces.
