T-5 whine in reverse? loud!
I know some imports make that whine in reverse but is it normal for a t-5 in my 92 RS? The car has about 105,000 on the clock and has been doing it for as long as I can remember I just thought I would ask.

Never seen the insides of a T-5, but typically, the reverse gears in transmissions are straight-cut rather than helical like the forward gears.
Straight-cut gears are noisy; in some transmissions more, some less.

They have straight cut teeth for the reverse, and they do make more noise, usually not an annoying amount though. if it's behaving properly, not jumping out of gear or anything like that and there isn't large quanties of steel in the fluid when you do changes you should be ok.

That noise is exactly the reason for helical cut gears for the forward gears. Its nothing unusual. Many race cars have trans's with straight cut gears because they allow faster gear changes and they are stronger too (could be wrong about that one though), but the noise is just insane.

I think straight cut gear transmissions are stronger than helical cut gear transmissions because they tend to transmit loads the gears rather than the case.

Contrary to popular beleif, the nickname "rock crusher" has NOTHING to do with the strength of the M22... it was the whinning sound it made

My buddy Abe has a Jericho tranny in his 60 Impala. That bad boy is loud!!! I think it is worth the noise, tho, because he doesn't even have to lift to shift. He just holds it to the wood and pulls it into second. You should hear it when he tries to shift it slow just cruising tho. GRIND!!! NO synchros.
I like the "whine" I think it sounds kinda racey.
