OT: important 95 jeep trans tech Q for trans techs

have no where else to post right now where theres anyone who knows about transmissions

95 jeep grand cherokee with the 4.0L and auto overdrive trans and part time 4x4,

its only got 90k original miles on it

it wil drive still and everything but not very well when its cold, you will smell a burnt smell after driving it on an errand etc.
it slips when its cold like its in neutral,

its always made the noises, only when you shift into reverse and then drive

and it will slip then grab,
and is ok when its warm

does it need trans X to get seals back into shape ? what do i need to put in the trans to try ? other than dropping pan and replacing that much fluid ?

is this a common problem with these ? i think its the 42RE trans not the AW4

right ?

sound slike it would be fine if wouldnt slip and usch when cold

but the burnt smell outside of the car ?

thanks for anything

How long do you plan to keep the truck? If you want it long term don't use any addative in the trans designed to improve sealing. These products just cause the seals to swell temporarily to mask the real problem, but eventually the seals will fail and the trans could be completely ruined (not rebuildable) in the process. These products are a crutch, not a cure.

If you want to keep the truck long term get the trans rebuilt by a reputable shop.

The real problem is that you have a Chrysler transmission. These problems are all to common for Grand Cherokees, Ram trucks, and the like. A friend of mine has his own construction company and bought 3 new Rams. I told him he'd regret it, but he just kept saying "I got a good deal, GM and Ford didn't want to come down on the price enough." I said "That's because they sell a quality product, and they don't have to reduce the cost as much to make the sale". Every truck required a rebuilt trans before 50,000 miles. The factory warranty expired at 36,000. Now all the Rams have been replaced by Chevy trucks. I've got about ten stories like that.
