First, what kind of trans is it? Auto? Stick?

Second, I've rebuilt both and don't think I'm nuts...

Well, people always fear what they don't understand. I used to say that I'd never rebuild an auto. Then the trans in my truck took a dump and I couldn't find anyone around here that I had the confidence in to just turn the job over to. When the guy who's supposed to rebuild the trans just keeps saying "those 700R4s are junk, you need to get a TH350" it just isn't confidence inspiring. I wasn't willing to drop $1,200 plus for a crate trans with no converter, so my options were basically limited.

My advice would be to go with a full kit from Dana at Pro-Built. Get a Haynes and/or AGC manual and read it cover to cover about three times before you ever even pull the trans. You will need one special tool to rebuild automatics. It's a clutch spring compressor. I got mine for $45 at a swap meet.

Everything else comes down to taking your time, and following the instructions, and most importantly not taking any chances, making guesses, or taking shortcuts. If you've got a question ask someone on this site, or call Dana at Pro-Built.

So how'd you compress the clutch spring pack to remove and install the low/reverse piston?

That's all well and good for those who have access to a press, but if you had to pay someone to do it at the local parts store you could easily buy the tool for less than it would cost to have it taken apart and reassembled. I got my spring compressor for $45 at Carlisle, and it worked well. Now I've got the tool, so in ten years when I have to rebuild the trans again I'll still have it. Plus I just know that I'll wind up doing at least one more for a friend along the way.

To each his own.

If it wasn't done before I highly recommend upgrading the 3-4 clutch pack assembly. The stock pack uses as few as 6 clutches, but you can go up to 9 if the installer knows what he's doing. Stay away from alto red frictions and Koleen steels too. These work fine in TH350s and TH400s, but the 700R4 is better off w/ the Borg Warner High Energy parts. They handle heat better, and that's what kills automatics.
