700R4 Shift Points

I ordered the B&M governor recalibration kit a couple of weeks ago and had Dyno Don install it today. Here is the background. My 1-2 and 2-3 shifts were around 5000-5200rpm. I had also installed the 3.70 gear package in my 9 bolt from the stock 3.27. With the gear change, the cam upgrade to the ZZ9 and other intake and exhaust upgrades I wanted the shift points up a good 400 or more rpms.

My stock governor inner weights weighed 9.89 and 9.79 grams on my scale. The governor also had the red and blue springs respectively. After a lot of research I changed the weight that weighed 9.79 grams with the B&M #4 weight. The B&M #4 weighed 7.13 grams on my scale. While I was at it I changed the blue spring with a green one which is the next lighter one. This prolongs the shift points slightly at partial throttle. Your only supposed to change one thing at a time.

Took it out for the road test. The lighter spring did what it was supposed to do at part throttle and made driveability that much better. I tried the 1/2 shift point test but my tires were slipping so bad when I floored it that the rpms shot up to 5400-5500 and stayed there as the car was catching up. I had to pass up that test after a couple of tries. To much power for the street tires. However the 2-3 rpms were around 5600 on my tach which is usually 100 to 200 rpms below the actual shift poing.

Bottom line is I got what I wanted with just the one weight change and the spring at this point. When I do the dyno tune I will fine tune the shift point adjustment to take maximum advantage of the horsepower versus rpm range. I hope this helps those doing the same. Remember the weighing was done on my scale and yours may well be different. But at least it gives you an idea. Allen

Update. Yesterday I was able to run the "Datamaster" program on my car while driving around. The 1-2 shift point is at 6000rpm which is good for my setup. With the low 1st gear of the 700R4 I need to wind the motor up higher so that the shift to 2nd does not drop the RPM's too low. The 2-3 shift is at 5600RPM which is about right. I'm going to leave things alone for now as the part throttle shift points are very good and things are in the ballpark. Allen
