couple questions over t-5 swap
im currently swapping in a t-5 for my 700r4, unfortunatly last week i shattered a sunshell and some planetaries, so what better opportunity for a swap? anyways...i was wondering if anyone happened to know a part number on the connector i will need for the reverse switch on the tranny, also, for the TC lockup connector, do i just cut the connector off and connect the two wires?? also, the tranny im getting is out of a 91 z28, and my car is equiped with 2.73s, and correct me if im wrong, but the 91 z28 with the t-5 came with 3.08s?? so does this mean my speedo will be off? thanks in advance

The reverse connector is a regular 2-prong round-plug connector, you can find it at any stealership. Or junkyard if you have good ones in your area.
TC connector: leave it unplugged.
Yes, if you have 2.73's, you need a different VSS. I doubt your current VSS from the auto will fit in the T-5 anyway (mine didn't). If you need any more help with sensor and gear part numbers, lemme know.
Good luck, it's a fun swap.
Lou
In Edit: I assume you know what to do with the 6 shifter switch wires?

I never read anything about the TC lockup wires having to be jumped. I left the whole 4-pin plug disconnected and it's working fine.
The auto VSS is in most cases the big one - almost 2" in diameter - (see pic) and the T-5 VSS is usually the small one - under 1" in diameter - (see pic). I am referring to the diameter of the hole, not the metal body of the sensor.
If you have your T-5 close by, measure the diameter of the hole in the tailhousing where the VSS goes. You can find the VSS at a dealership (part # 10456087) for under a hundred bucks. If you have a friend there, it might cost you only $50. Advance Auto Parts sell them for cca $80, NAPA would charge you around $75. AutoZone does not carry these.
You will also need the right gear for the sensor. Depending on your tire size, axle ratio and drive gear teeth, you can calculate what you need:
Tires: 245/50R16
AR (axle ratio): 2.73
T1 (teeth #1): 9 (red gear)
TD (tire diameter): 25.65"
TRPM (tire revolutions per minute): 20168 / TD = 786.28
T2 (teeth #2): T1 * AR * TRPM / 1001 = 19.30
So you might need a 19-tooth driven gear. But that depends on the DRIVE gear in the tailhousing. Check the number of teeth on it.
The driven gears for a T-5 speed sensor cost about $22 nowadays (yeah, talk about *******s trying to rip people off for a piece of plastic - the auto VSS gears cost $3) and can be obtained only at the dealer. I'll try to get the part number for ya.

thanks for all your help lou, everyone says the swap is fairly easy...whats your scoop? so far i have removed the brake pedal, shifter, and removed the 700... which is a pain when your working alone, now i just have to wait for my t-5 and change over accessories from hawks. everything from now on seems easy. what gears do you have out back?

Express autoparts.com is listing 4 different VSS for 1992 ranging in price from $34 to $70. The one I needed for my 87 wound up being the $35 one. The spendier ones were for Automatics.

If you have a part #, that would help the most.

92rsbowtie, I forgot to mention one thing. When you're stabbing the T-5 and it won't go all the way up into the tunnel ... you're probably doing the same thing as I did. I didn't know the bellhousing would have to be taken off the tranny and put on the engine block first. Never had to do it on my truck that way so it wasn't common knowledge for me.
So just to save you some time (if you already don't know it): you gotta put the bellhousing on the engine first and then stab the T-5 body into it. Otherwise you're risking hours of frustration.

The VSS I got from expressautoparts.com was the SC7 for 34.95 The other two they listed for 1987 were RPO D9A and D9B(the D9B being the one that came in my automatic from the factory) I think one of them was SC5(D9B) which was like $80.
The only way I found out which one was the right one was I went to the local parts house and had them look it up in a book. They listed the SC5, SC7, etc and had pictures. The SC7 was the smaller T5 type while the others were too big to be the right ones. It just so happens that Express autoparts.com listed the VSS by the same number that was in the book.(SC7) I hope to heck it is the right one or I don't know what I am going to do.
