The WC replaced the T-5 towards the later years, 87-88 ? Not sure about that, someone should know. I know my '91 is a WC.

Uh...no. They came stock in 90-92 and I believe were an upgrade option in 87+? Someone will correct me with the right dates, but it came stock in out cars.

I belive 89 was the first year they started to put them in our cars, u can tell them apart by the drain and fill plugs, world class has a allen key plug, there barley better then the normal t-5's, if your make any power and use it often either will last to long with sticky tires... but they are fun and pretty easy to fix...

1988 is the first year the World Class T5 was used in our f-bodies.

No there arent any aftermarket T5's for our cars like there are for Mustangs.

The closest replacement is the Tremec T5, which can be made for both an f-body and a mustang.

Yes, a world class T5 from a 88-92 V8 f-body is a direct replacement for a non-world class T5 from a 83-87 V8 f-body.

The World Class T5 has been in automobiles since 1985. Early non World Class 5 speed actually started finding themselves in autos in early 1983. Unlike the 6 speed Richmond Gear transmission this box was never designed around or based on American muscle car needs. The term "World Class" refers to a "World Class standard". What is this standard? Prior to this transmission's design no American car had a gearbox that felt and shifted like European and Japanese 4 and 5 speeds. The Richmond 6 speed is noisy and hard shifting because it uses the same basic synchro rings used in 1957 Borg Warner T-10 4 speeds. The World Class box allowed our muscle cars to shift like BMW's or 300ZX's. The concept was never intended for drag racing but for comfortable road touring. Carbon Fiber synchro rings, tapered bearings, and rollerized gears. Since engines took on fuel injection and lower torque bands they could easily handle the 3.35 or 2.95 1st gear ratios and enjoy the .68 and .73 overdrive. Borg Warner's mistake was that they underestimated American muscle car mentality and before they new it people were trashing these 5 speeds at the drag strip

Tremec vs WC T-5 - Tremec handles more power.

Tremec vs NWC T-5 - Tremec again

-If you're handy with tools, you can upgrade a WC T-5 to handle power, for about 1.5K...

Or - You can buy a Tremec for a bit over 2K

Or - You can get a T56 which won't handle quite as much as the two above, but still more than any stock T-5.

That statement is wrong. WCT-5's don't use hex key plugs. (at least mine doesn't) The only real way to tell the difference is explained in this thread. https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...on+world+class

What do you mean by no aftermarket T5's for our cars? What about G-Force? You will spend about the same amount of $$$ going to a Tremec.

Yea but for that kind of cash why not spend the extra dough and fork it up for a T-56. They can handle tremendous amounts of abuse and you get the extra overdrive gear.

pasky, I agree - the T-56 is defintley an upgrade to a stock T-5, and the overdrive is a plus on the road.

But you can get optional gearing on the T-5 upgade so that 5th gear is a .59 ratio vice the .76 (i think) ratio the stock trans had. But the first four are stock ratio's. That's what I opted for on mine.

You just have to get used to winding 4th out a bit longer than the first 3!! lol

Or you can get a WC T5 rebuilt and upgraded at the same time to handle 400-450 hp/ft. lbs. for about $700--without all the clutch hassle of putting in a T56--saves at least a grand for gas and burgers.
