Put my car in park while doing 45MPH!!!

I just got done replaceing the gasket on my transmission and went to take it for a test drive. I was going throught he gears 1,2 D, OD at stoplights well at one i was doing about 45 and i heard a thunk and i dont know why but i had slammed it into park. It was in park for about 5 seconds while i trid to fgue out what the grinding sound i herd was and i realized i went way to far up. I continued my drive and now at low RPMS i hear a vibrating noise almsot sounded like where the CAT is but it wont make the nose in P or N when i rev it so im wonderning if it is my tranny. I tried a brake stand to see if it was my tranny mount and all seemd ok there. The tranny shifts fine still but its that vibrating sound that i hear now. Could i have some how killed my CAT or my Tranny.

I feel purley stupid right now.

Ive done it several times with my present transmission. All that happens is that the parking pawl tries to engage but cant since your moving so it makes that metallic buzzing noise in park. In mine it didnt to any obvious damage.

When we first moved out my roomate was a car salesman so he got different cars every week. On more than a few nights consuming adult beverages some of these cars seen reverse/park at hwy speed and whould make some pretty gross sounds. Every one drove out fine the next day.

I do not condone or approve consuming adult beverages while in a moving vehicle on public roadways. Stupid mistakes of youth!!

i think we are hearing the same buzzing type sound... i have still yet to figure out what it is... i have never slammed mine in park like that, so i guess its not your tranny thats doing it... my transmount is broke, but im not sure if it would make that noise...

The parking pawl is designed not to be able to engage while the vehicle is moving. It is held into the trans case with a roll pin that it pivots on.
Putting the vehicle in park while moving normally would not hurt the trans, as the parking pawl will ratchet until the vehicle reaches about 5 MPH and then engage. But based on the sounds you are describing, the parking pawl may have been damaged. Have you verified that park still works? You may want to put the vehicle in park and try to push it, if you can roll it while in park, you know that parking pawl is no longer working.

I'd suggest gettign a nice b+m megashifter, can go into neutral but cant go into reverse or park and you really have to be paying no attention to go into neutral since its a ratchet shifter

How's the rear end and tail shaft?

before you go and dig into the trans I'd check out your rear end and your tail shaft, make sure the trans mount is good and the bolts to the motor, and torque converter are tight, kind of obvious advice but it may help, I put a new trans in about a month ago, got onto the road and stabbed it in first, out of the blue the rear end exploded like a bomb (notoriously weak 7.5's )

i did the same thing but i put it park at about 25mph. I also felt a little vibrating noise so couple weeks afterwards i had it professionally rebuilt and with a B&M Megashifter. Havent had any problems shifting since.

Not to add insult to injury, but how could you have shifted into P without pressing the top black shift button?? If you dont press that you can still shift up but it wont go any farther north than N.

I had just changed the fluid and wanted to work it through the gears because before i changed it it felt like it had some slipping probly due to a low fluid level because of the leak. The only reason i did what i did is because i heard a loud THUNK and for some reason paniced and put it in park with out thinking. Also by pushing the black putton it keeps my shift **** on because it liked to slip off when you pull it back or push it forward.

I did the same thing a week ago while stopping at a stop light. I was messing with a 5.0 and I thought I was in 3rd and wanted to put it in to OD. It looked like I was in OD to begin with and forced it to much and put it in to reverse at like 7 MPH and Killer the car. Started it back up and there has not been a problem since though. Really sucks though I thought I might have messed up my new built Th700 R4 that has less than less than 1000 miles. Part of the problem in my case is that the plastic strip that moves with the shifter to show what gear you are in is cut in 2 pieces, so some times it shows I am in the right gear, I am either a whole gear off what I should be, or it shows that I am in between gears. It’s funny to see peoples reactions though, like people asking why I am driving in Neutral.

you don't need overdrive until the triple digits normally(for racing) depending upon you gearing, but you can just leave it in drive.

I awalys drive in OD except for when im raceing then i go into D. I have heard peope say keep it in od and use D for when you are towin or raceing. or people say odnt use OD and keep your car in D until you are going 55.

Now you've brought something up that has me asking a question... sorry if this throws the topic off.

When I put the car in D it shifts normally around. When I put it in OD it will shift around to keep it at as low an RPM as possible. I thought that OD was just access to 4th gear, it didnt have any effect on how your car shifted?

Or was this some type of weird addition to the Berlinettas?

When you are at a stady speed it will drop the RPM's at least thats what m car does.

I put mine in od alot around town to keep the rpm's down adn on the highway its nice with the od and 2.73's she cruises like a bat outta hell. I find the problem with drive on the street with mine atleast is teh rpms are higher and the pipes tend to bark like a sawed off shotgun if i get on it then let up. Or if i'm in drive and let off down a hill, not police freindly. I always understood od was almost like a 5 or 6th gear.

Now that someone else has does something similar to what I have done to my car, I won't feel so stupid asking this.

If I were to have been going at around 30 MPH down the road and "accidentally" shifted into reverse and slammed the gas while the car is still going forward, could that have caused any extreme damage? The car sputtered for a second, then stalled out in the middle of the road. After I got it started again, the car seemed to shift fine... well, as well as it did before anyway.

I feel like such an idiot... take it from me, don't try to show off. It will only get you into trouble.

Thats what i thought when after i did it i should have gotten a mega shifter. I wonder if my vibration i feel could be from bad u joints maybe. it only vibrats really bad at 1250-1500 rpm with a load on the tranny. I have gone about 700 miles since this has happend and it shifts perfectly fine still.

Exactly, I was messing with this Mustang and it was in in D the whole time. Then we hit a residential area so I was not gonna be stupid about it so OD for regular driving for me.

I shifted a 1973 Grand Prix Pontiac into reverse while going down the hiway at 55mph. 31 years ago... never will forget it.

Did it just to see what would happen. And to see if it would go into reverse. Hmmm it DID. Surprised the heck outta me.

It did 4 360's down the highway with me frantically trying to keep it out of the ditches.
Ended up headed in the same direction I was originally going.
Believe me, I'm GOOD. But not THAT good.

Havent' done THAT again. No damage though.
