Transmission Leak.

I have a transmission leak on my 89 Camaro. I checked the fluid on the dipstick and it was a reddish brown color. I bought a quart of transmission fluid and it is nowhere near the red color in the new bottle.

Where do you think the leak is coming from?

What do I need to do about the reddish brown color of the fuid?

How much would it cost to get this problem fixed?

I would do it myself but I have no idea or experience with transmissions.

Please Help

Car: too many ...
Did you just change anything related to the tranny? Install an aftermarket shifter maybe? I've had a tranny leak related to a B&M shifter install gone wrong (previous owner), ended up he used the wrong bolts (not the B&M provided bolts) and the pan bolts were leaking. I've also had a leak related to the dipstick tube, didnt make a good seal on the o-ring where it connects into the tranny. To determine where the leak is, get under the car and take a look. The fluid will be building up somewhere (thats where it drops to the ground). Follow the fuild to see where its coming from. If you cant tell then clean the whole area up and check it again in a few days. As for the color of the fluid, you should me more concerned with the smell. If you think the fluid needs to be changed, then change it. Its not a hard job at all, but messy if you dont have a pan with a drain plug. Once the pan is off, check the magnet. Metal flakes are not good.

take it to a shop. no point wasting time here if you can't or won't fix it yourself.

I can do it myself. I live near an Air Force base which has an Auto Skills Center on base. It's like have access to a service shop but without paying someone to do it. It costs $10 a day and they have every tool available and hydraulic lifts. They even have mechanics there to assist you if needed.

Like I said..I can do it myself, but only if it's something simple. I can't go into the tranny and start messing around in there since I don't know anything about it.

I was looking under the car when I saw it drip. I saw it dripping directly in the middle of the car underneath. I don't know if the drip is running from somehwere else cause I haven't lifted the car yet, but I did see it drip from the middle. If it's simple, tell me what parts I would need to replace and how to do it if you can. Thanks

Take it to a shop to have it flushed. It sounds like it could use it. While its there, they can see where its leaking from. The dipstick, manual shaft, pan, rear seal, etc probably wouldnt be too costly to replace but the front seal will cost more as they have to pull the trans to pop a new seal in. Probably not a bad idea to check the pump out as well. Wish I had pulled the pump and inspected it the last time I had my trans out...

BTW, you can put a smaller version of that picture in your sig if youve uploaded it to a webspace or something. Itll save HD space on the server since you wont have to upload the pic each time you post, which you shouldnt do alot anyway.

I think I have a tranny leak too... Anyone else think so?

Its actually the result of starting to remove the engine/tranny as a unit and then finishing about 6 weeks later, not remembering that the tranny wasn't drained when I started.

80lbs of cat litter later, it was all cleaned up
