4.10 or 3.73 one safer?
i was reading that 4.10's in a 10 bolt were more likely to break sooner than 3.73's (or something smaller). is this true? i have a set of both gears- i would rather use the 4.10- but not if i am going to break things sooner. i have welded the axle tubes, solid spacer, and rear end girdle. if it matters - its an automatic (700r4), about a 2800 stall, and 26" hoosier qtp's

tooth count is almost identical between the two so thats not an issue.either one will be fine ,as long as they are installed properly,in our shop we use gauges to set the pinion depth according to the master housing dimension an pinion checking distance.we use a gage to set backlash and side clearance, and an inch pounds wrench to set the rotating torque on the pinion bearings and new crush sleeve.there is no other way.

the 4.10's in a 10bolt are definitely weaker. I don't remember if it's the smaller diameter pininon, or the ring gear being thinner that make it weak, but it's true. Whatever you decide, make sure that it suits your engine/tranny combo.

I have never used 4.10 gears myself but I kow a guy who broke teeth off the ring gear 2 different times with a stock 2000 Ram Air TA. I have used 3.73 gears in two different cars that was not stock and I have not had any problems.

the person I was talking about broke teeth off the ring gear both times, pinion gear looked fine. Either way it was broke. I wouldn't even consider 4.10's, the 3.73's in my car is really too much. I think 3.42 would have een better for me,but thats just me.

as long as you don't run a sticky tire you can get away with it. a good majority of the 6 speed guys that have went to the 4.10's have ended up with 12 bolt's.
