Ok I got a leakin tranny, n a smokin cat. I pulled the flywheel cover n the tc doesnt appear to be caked with tranny fluid looks pretty clean up in there. But shes leaking from the front part of the pan/flywheel cover. I pulled the pan changed the fliter, changed the pan gasket, replaced the output shaft seal. I had a synthetic ATF in it before n i heard that stuffs more prone to leakin so i put in the old skewl regular atf dexron III. Anyway I guess my question is, if its leaking from the front seal wouldnt the torque converter be caked with ATF? And if its leaking from the front seal why is the catilytic converter smokin? Doesnt look like its getting sprayed by ATF, the outside of it looks pretty clean. I jus had a new cat put on her about a year ago.

Well, it does sound like a front seal, your TC doesnt neccesarily have to be caked with tranny fluid, because it probably drips straight down and flows back with the airflow, what does the underside of the car lok lik, mainly the tranny, caked in old fluid? As for the cat, one drop of tranny fluid hits that and smoke goes, just be careful, I watched a RX7 with a leaky tranny catch on fire cause the fluid hit the hot cat. If I was you, id pull the tranny out and replace the front seal and while your at it, check lines and the entire transmission. Its alot of work but if it fixes it its always worth it.

yea mainly jus the tranny caked in fluid, you can see where the output shaft seal had to be replaced cuz it spewed onto the driveshaft n it flung it everywhere. Ima try n get some pictures of it tomorow. Im not sure what it is but the linkage deal that bolts to the bottom of the pan has that lil boot thing over it, its caked in fluid as well. The majority of the dripping is coming from where the flywheel cover bolts next to the pan, and off the middle of the flywheel cover. So im assuming its got to be the front seal.

it is also very common for the oring that seals the pump to the transmission case to leak on the side where the catalitic is.this is because the heat from the cat dries out the oring making it hard and not avle to seal well
