9-bolt pinion depth

I know this subject has been beaten like a dead horse on this board, but has anyone actually measured the pinion depth on their 9-bolt before swapping gears? I know I did not and I have since then changed pinion bearings and still have a whine that I know is from improper pinion depth. Now I know what a good pattern should look like but the reason why I am asking is how can some one tell if they need a .001" or so by a grease or marking compund???

Also I have aftermarket gears that I believe have no ,marks what so ever on them. They cam from Miles.

So if you took the time to read this whole post, thanks! All I really want is one little number.

pinion depth is differant for each gear set, even if a lot of them have the same pinion depth. so checking an existing set up may or may not help you. sorry i don't know the number, or even a number close to the number.
