How do you install a spool in a car that has a posi?

My posi is CRAP. I don't drive this car on the street a whole lot, so a spool would be a nice cheap solution. Since the posi is also the carrier, how would you install a mini-spool on a car with a stock posi such as my 88 bird??

Yup, you'd get an open carrier.

yeah i guess i should of said that, but i thought it was a given that you'd need an open carrier. how hard do you think an open carrier would be to find? should be able to have your pick of them for free.
i even have a new unused mini spool sitting around somewhere i'd sell for less than a new one from the store.

Forget the spool. Weld the spiders, be done with it.

Wow! I would not expect that kind of bad advice from you. I hope you were kidding.

Just put a nice bead in the valley of one tooth on each spider, it'll lock just like a spool.

Well, I'll admit I haven't seen anybody do it for a little over 30 years. In that case, it wasn't the welds that had a problem but the driveshaft that suddenly couldn't handle the new-found traction (5000 RPM launches probably didn't help, either).

But, if he has to buy a different carrier to install the mini-spool, it'll be a lot more than $50. And, the only ones I see are Richmond & Summit for 26-spline axles only, and cost closer to $100. And, they are for dirt track use only, not drag racing.

Full spool is a different matter. But, don't see anybody that offers them for 7.5/7.625".

Ever tell you about the guy that made his open carrier into a "posi" by stuffing in extra spider shims?

Never mind. If you're changing carriers, either get a posi, or an open into which you put a PowerTrax.

WOW, I've never heard of anyone doing that before. Sounds pretty damn unsafe Any street driving at all, and it would probably weld the spiders together for you
