New gears and they whine???

Hey guys i just got my brand new Motive 3.73 gears put in today along with a solid pinion space and TA performace girdle cover. Now im gettin a whine from the rear and its only on deceleration. could that be from the new gears needing to break in or possibly not set just right? the guy that did the work stands be hinds all his work so if its off he'll fix it. but my brother told me to give it some time.

I'm going to assume that you are changing from the typical 2.93 or 3.23 gears from 82 to the 3.73s....

I wouldn't worry too much about it. Give it some time. Also, higher ratio gears will always make more noise than lower ratio ones, just because there's fewer pinion teeth, so there's more of a "cogging" effect. If they're quiet on acceleration, and they stay that way, then they're probably fine.

Break them in properly: the first drive should be 15-20 minutes at a moderate road speed, like 45-55 mph, not *****-to-the-wall freeway; do that, then park the car and let them cool down for 2 hours or so, then do it again for about 30-40 minutes at a good freeway cruise, then let them cool overnight. Correct break-in can make a big difference to their longevity. Above all, DON'T take it out immediately and start beating up on them. Temp-cycle them gently a couple of times before you do that.

RB is right. Give it some time. I have installed several sets of 3.73s, and they all make a little noise. As long as he set them up right, w/ the correct specs on backlash and the right pattern a little noise won't hurt anything. Mine whine, but I can barely hear it over my exhaust most of the time.

Take the break-in seriously. If not then you will regret it later.

Well after gettin te car back i drove back home took about 15 mins goin about 35-45 mph then later that night me and my friend went for a ride to see how big of a difference they made and that took about a nice hour mainly at about 55-60 ( i was doin 3k on the tach, speedo doesnt work) and then afterthat i let it sit till tis morning when i went to work. my friend at work told me id get that whine also since i got the bigger gears now. also i went from the stock 82 3.23 to the 3.73. they made a huge improvment from stop up thru top end. i got on it once to see how it would feel and i can bark into 2nd gear again. after i put the hooker long tubes on i lost the ablity to chirp into second but now its back. i wounder how much there goin to make differnce wise on the track.
