i set up my ring and pinion set replaced all bearings set the correct pinion depth and backlash. the marking compound showed the gears meshing correctly and when i fill the differential up and run it it still whines a little when i accelerate and when i let off and coast. is this normal???? i have heard rchmond gears are loud but didnt know if it was true

I swear by them. Just installed a fresh set in my Moser 9" after toasting the bearings. It doesn't make a sound.

A little whining is normal for Richmonds, and even some of the other gears. Does it do it at all MPH or just at a certain range. Richmonds are known for their 40-50 whine on accel and decel.

I have Richmond gears and they whine at all speed's and rpm's, to different degrees. But it doesn't whine all the time. Just under light load and constant speed. As soon as I get on it (or off it for that matter), the whine stops. It only whines under a light load and/or a constant speed. All be it some speeds are louder than others, like 40-50mph. I called a couple of ring and pinion guys and they said they could try and re-shim the pinion but seeing as I have had them in for 5 years now there is probably a wear pattern in the gears and re-shimming might not work. I recently put a TA girdle on and while the cover was off I didn't notice any wear on the gears and no metal shavings in the oil either (the gears looked brand new). Would it be worth it to get the pinion re-shimmed? or just live with the noisey Richmonds.
