off throttle rpm drop

Ok, here's the deal. I have a 1988 Z with 350TPI and 700-R auto. Well, now when I let off the gas to slow down, the rpms drop to idle. If I push on the gas the rpms will rise until it engages agin. I think it's a converter problem, like maybe the lock up feature is disengaging or something. I'm lost. Any expertise will be appreciated on this subject.

yeah bro, sometimes it will do that too, but it always shifts good. I'm probably going to put a mild stall converter in it and if it doesn't change anything than its time to get a Stage 2 or 3 Bowtie Overdrives 700-R

before you buy another tranny or converter try adjusting your tv cable sometimes they will come loose and cause the same problem with the nuetrall between gears ........

That is a normal condition for auto's, if they they didnt drop it would feel like driving a standard trans car when you let off the gas. We get new cars in here all the time complaning about the same concern. There is nothing wrong and nothing to fix, just a normal operation of an automatic trans unless it is in low or second.

when you give it gas is it like the car is revving up before it goes into gear and like it is popping into nuetral when you let off the gas????

yep, that's exactly what it is doing. say I'm in third gear, when I let off the gas the rpms drop to idle, now if I get back on the gas, it will freely rev up until it I feel the torque accelerate the car

Hmm.... A normal auto, the engine HAS to hold rpms with the transmission up to a certain point? Why? The torque converter. Above the stall speed, the converter IS just like with a manual transmission. Stall speed on a stock converter is low...it can be anywhere from 1200 to 1600 or so, that I've heard of so far anyways. Once the rpms approach the stall speed, then the engine WILL fall back to an idling speed IF the idle air control valve is malfunctioning. Otherwise, the idle air valve will keep the rpms up higher until you come to an almost complete stop.

So it sounds like you either have very low line pressure in your transmission and it's slipping out of gear.....or you have a high stall replacement converter.

the low line pressure can be changed by adjusting the tv cable
