A corvette 700-R4 in a third gen camaro...

I currently have a stock 700-R4 in my 83 Z-28 and I want to put in a modified 700-R4 from a vette in it's place. I have heard from some that it can't be done and I have heard some say that it can be done as the vette tranny is only about an inch shorter than the camaro 700-R4.....so which is it? Can it be done,or not?

Well, no C5 corvette tranmission will, work due to its transmission mounting to the rear axle not the the engine. I think C4 ones will though, but don't quote me.

Well my original question was about using the c-4 700-R4 in my third gen to begin with, not the c-5,so if anyone really knows please post or PM me and let me know.

The corvette transmission is shorter, has no provisions to mount the torque arm, and I believe has the mounting holes in a different location. Nothing insurmountable, but why bother?

I purchased a used TCI trans. that was used on a Third Gen.
I compared the output shaft from the TCI trans. and the output shaft out of an 89 Vette. The shafts are identical except the splined area on the Vette trans. is .5 inches shorter.
The TCI web site says it is around 1 inch?

The tail shaft housing on the C4 Vette bolts to a torque beam via two bolts. You need to use the tail shaft housing for a Third Gen.

The Vette C4 trans. uses a VSS signal for the speedometer.

Also note, the 84 Vette trans. used a 27 spline input shaft .
The 85 and latter Vette trans. input shaft is 30 spline which
means you need a 30 spline torque converter.

The Main case all have the same exterior dimensions.
In 87 the 700R4 received the auxiliary valve body and
other improvements.

Here's a site which may help deciper what year trans. you have.
http://technicalvideos.com/what_year_700R4.phtml

So the answer to your question is yes it can be done.

The new Camaros came with 4L60E tranmissions but if I recall they only bolt to 3rd gen small blocks like the late model T-56. Someone back me up on this.

An auto from a lt1 car will bolt up. But it isn't that strong and must be run by a computer.

So has anyone actually put an F-body tail housing on a C4 vette tranny and used it? I need to know, I'm going back automatic after getting the hook up on a used vette 700r4. I know that it will in theory work, but are there any little problems you'd encounter? (maybe breaking the yoke because of the shorter output shaft?)

Im not runing an auto but ive been using a corvette 4+3 manual trans for over a decade now without a drive shaft problem. My output shaft was at least an inch shorter than the auto. Im using the original alluminum shaft also. As long as your not running slicks you should be ok.

I just bought a rebuilt tranny for my 1990 GTA . When I picked it up it did not have the tailshaft housing on it, they gave me a new rear seal, housing gasket and speedo gear gasket. I did not have mine out yet, had I brought my tranny with me to pick up the new one, they would have put MY tail housing on the new one.(that is why they gave me the stuff I would need to change it) I installed the new one last weekend, after putting my tail housing on it. Everything was going fine, all I had left to hook up was the cross member and put the driveshaft in, I crawl back under the car with my tranny mount and the two bolts, hey, there are NO FOCKIN BOLT HOLES for the tranny mount! I look at my old tranny and the holes are in the tranny case. New tranny, no bolt holes. So I call the shop where I got it to explain my problem, as it turns out they gave me a Corvette trans by mistake. The vette trans has the crossmember bolt holes in the tailshaft housing, 3rd gens have them in the trans case, I suppose you could put the vette housing on and relocate your crossmember, but as mentioned above, WHY ? Now I have to drop the trans and take it back to get the right one . I did put the crossmember back on to hold the rear of the trans up and put the drive shaft in to keep the car from rolling out of the driveway, and as far as trans length goes, the driveshaft fit perfectly. There is just nowhere to hookup the mount. FYI, vette trannys have a big V on both sides of the case, I thought the shop put it on there to identify there transmissions, nope, factory mark for-Vette.
