Car: '85 Camaro
Engine: LG4 305
Transmission: T-5
TKO-500 and TKO-600
I guess the regular TKO transmissions are going to be phased out.

My mechanic told me my T-5 is shot so I have to replace it. It is no big deal as I was anticipating that. At some point the rear and the engine will be replaced also. I am discovering that any replacement other than a T-5 is going to require extra stuff. I would prefer to do it right than try and get by. I just don't know what the right stuff is. I know a new cross member is required, but what else? What does a trans come with, and what do you buy extra?
Are there alternatives from other companies to consider, or does Tremec have a lock on the business? I heard that the Richmond trans won't fit because of the external shift linkage. I don't know who else makes trans anymore.
Thanks,
Jason

Seems that the T-56 swap (the LT1 version of it) is pretty popular these days, for exactly that sort of reason... they're relatively plentiful and cheap, and not too terribly hard to put in.

Correct, the 3550/TKO transmissions are being phased out (very few left), and the Ford TKO-500s are rolling in (got our 1st shipment today), and the GM versions should be only a few weeks away (unless you want to pay to have a Ford version converted).
The TKO-600s are scheduled for mid-May timeframe.
These new trannies are upgraded versions of the 3550/TKO trannies that have been around since the early 90s, so it's not a 'brand new' tranny from that point of view.
Right, you can install an LT1 T56 6sp, and they are plentiful. Just don't get one from '93 and early '94, they had some problems that were corrected in mid-late '94.
The TKO-500 and TKO-600 can be installed right in with the F-Late input shaft, adapter plate, and torque arm mods.
There's pics and details here:

take care,
