1987 IROC VSS question
Well, it's sort of a 1987 IROC VSS question....
I've got a 350 that I'm dropping into a 1986 RX7, using the TPI setup and 700r4 from an '87 IROC-Z. Which means I have (had actually) the optical speedo pickup for the VSS. Now here is my ?. What will having no VSS do to the ECU? I have a manual speedo, and I will run a reluctor box to compensate for my gears/Mazda speedo. I have no cruise, actually the only accessory on the motor will be the alternator (no P.S. no AC, no A.I.R., no EGR, etc). Can I just have the ECU tweaked to ignore the VSS when I have the EGR killed?
I've searched the forum, and all I've seen it controls is governor, cruise, and speedo?
Does lack of VSS trigger limp in a stock ECU?
Thanks-
Blake

Your IROC VSS is not on the transmission. Since your car is an 87, you have a cable driven speedo, and the VSS is on the back of the gauge cluster.
EDIT: Sorry, I didnt read your post correctly. I didnt see that you were using mazda gauges and stuff. Your IROC harness isnt going to have a VSS plug on it since it has a cable driven speedo. There may be some way to convert the VSS signal to the proper input signal for the gauge cluster VSS. At worst, you could get an 87+ Firebird TPI harness, or a 90+ Camaro TPI harness, and use those since they would have the VSS plug. I would definitely try and get the computer to read the VSS though, I'm sure it's important.
