LS1 Driveshaft Install

I went to put in my LS1 driveshaft this weekend with my new rear, but my exhaust was in the way and have to get it moved. But here is the problem, the new shaft looks like it's going to be real close to the torque arm like almost touching. So people that have done this swap how close does it come to your Torque arm? (it's the factory torque arm btw)

it's the factory torque arm with a poly front mount, the 4.5 inch forged end on the driveshaft is the part that looks close

it also depends on your ride height, my driveshaft touches the TA when the suspension is completley unloaded and hanging.

Yeah, they're better to score out of junkyards, the paying $150 for one on ebay is INSANE......IMO.

What is the benefit of the LS1 driveshaft? Is it lighter or aluminum?

Not all 98-02 f-body driveshafts are aluminum.

No they are not. I don't remember the "rules" of which one got which, but mostly you'll find 2.73 geared cars with the steel shafts.

If the car (98-02) came with 2.73's, it also recieved a steel drive shaft. All cars that recieved 3.23 or 3.42 gears have an aluminum driveshaft.

The aluminum driveshaft was part of the WS6 package. If it didn't have the WS6 package it had a steel driveshaft. Aklaim is also right because no WS6 TA had 2.73's. The lower gears were also part of the WS6 package.

You are half right. You could get a regular Trans Am, Formula or Z28 with upgraded (performance) gears, which would also get you the upgraded drive shaft. You didnt have to buy the WS6 or SS package to get it. It was just included in that package.
