Well, your best going off and just buying a 90+ rear end with posi. You have an 85 which had the 26 spline axels. You can find rear ends pretty cheap and will save you money rather than buying a posi unit + pinion and ring gear.

LoL, as tempting as that may be don't expect your rear to last longer than 5 miles :P.

Going from a peg leg to posi requires you to change the carrier. They make posi's for 2 and 3 series carriers with 26 and 28 splined axles. You will find that there are far more parts out there that support a 3 series carrier with posi and 28 spline axles. Every single f-body from 90 on up came this way. It may be cheaper to located a posi rear end out of a junked car. You couls get one for a few hundred bucks and have it bolted in in a matter of hours.

Here's a direct Bolt in Posi Unit.

This is what i am considering since i am not ready to change out my gears. This is supposed to be an easy install.

i wouldn't go that way....cheap is cheap... lockers can be tough for daily driving, and a good way to snap an axel... especially them 26 spline ones... seen it happen already! driving the car can be difficult at times too, since a change in speed is what disconnectes the locker- makes plenty of noise and *** help ya if it starts actin up on ya in a corner in the rain....

not to try sellin parts outside the classified, but my best bud is sellin his auburn posi and 373 gears for around 250 bucks... its for a 26 spline rear- he bought a new chassis to put his motor and trans in, and it happened to have a 3.45 9 bolt which should hold up fine for his combo... shoot me a pm and i can get ya details on it if ur intrested- no more than 500 miles on the stuff, trans broke and the car has sat since waiting for warmer weather for the transplant.

anyways, side note - not very many 90's had 28 spline axels. this was the chnage over year and gm cleaned out there 26 spline parts bin before they switched over completely... i pulled several 90 rear eneds apart looking for 28 spline axels and found NONE... however, 91-92 are sure bets for 28 splines

89 was the change over year. So you have that backwards, 89 is the one that had 26 splines slip through.

89 might have been the change over year, but from personal experiance, its like finding hens teeth to find an 89 with 28 spline axels, and a lot of 90's also didnt have the 28's either...

i did find that the higher end models, like the z28 and the formy with the posi option, and the gta's had the 28 spliners...
