front tranny seal blown. q's on removing tranny
ok i just read a few posts on removing and installing but am still unclear on a couple things. first of all, is a tranny adapter necessary? will i have problems balancing it if i dont use one? i have a regular sized jack and dont think i've ever seen this adapter for sale at parts stores before.
and second, how hard is it to get the housing to line up with the alignment pins during installation?
any special tools i may need besides the flywheel turner? (i have all the basic stuff).
i will be doing this at home and it'll be my first time trying to remove a tranny.
TIA

what I did what I went and got some steel plate, cut 1ft by 1 ft and welded it to a regular jack adapter and bam... cut two lil holes on each side to wrap a chain around and bolt the chain thru the holes... works like a dream, and veryyyyyy cheap... but I guess if you feel risky and want to be dangerous, you 'coul'd do it without one, but why take the risk.. a 700r4 falling onto your arm will for sure break it, or hurt like a motherf*cker... or if it fell onto your chest or even head, dont take the risk.
you dont even need a flywheel turner, you can turnt he flywheel with a flathea screwdriver... no special tooks required at all..
aligning it up is easy, just take your time and make sure you are not pinching any electronics/linkage... its nice to have someone either push/raise/lower the floor jack with the tranny on it while the other person guides it and checks for crimping.
if you can start one of the bellhousing bolts, dont tighten it all the way until u get more started, you can throw the set-up off nad not allow the tranny to turn into place... just enough so it cant thread out/bust...
easiest way I found to remove the top bellhousing bolts is long 3/8 extensions with a swivel end to it... very easy, some poeple get them with a wrench/get them from up top, i dont see how but i guess its possible.. usually once u crack one loose, its finger loose afterwards
easy task, just take your time, dont get frustrated and more importanly, BE safe!

i just replaced my tranny a few months ago, i bought a tranny jack adaptor for my floor jack but there was no way i was going to be able to get the car high enough to use it so it was basically a waste of money. Me and my friend just balanced the tranny on a piece of wood, jacked it up, and the bellhousing bolts lined up perfectly. The hard part was getting the tranny balanced on the wood and floorjack, we had to slide the tranny under the car, lay down under the car and lift the tranny up about 6-9 inchs to get it on the floor jack/wood. IT SUCKED, im glad me and my friend started working out a few years ago, but after 3 or 4 trys, we got it.
here is the tech article that i used

thanx guys
i didnt take into account that i will need more space underneath the car for the adapter. so i think i will go ahead and try it with the regular jack and one or two other guys to help me.
vjo90RS8 - good article. i came across it and saved it when i did the search.
