Did I ruin my Tranny?

I am probably going to get laughed at for this but here is what happened to me tonight.

i am driving down a 4 lane road (2 lanes per direction) and i go to shift my car from drive into overdrive when i have to suddenly brake and i guess somehow i pushed the car from drive into reverse.

i heard a LOUD bang and a quick squeal from the tires and my car dies. So i quickly make a left turn onto another road and i finally notice the car is dead. i put it in nuetral and try to start it and nothing. i throw on the hazards and a really nice 4th gen guy pushes my car into a close by gas station by himself uphill.

i get out and look under the car because i hear this AWFUL grinding/whining sound even though the car is only to the on position and not started in park. nothing is leaking and everything seems fine.

i turn the key off and i am with 2 friends who are scared beyond belief and i just recently turned 18 and i dont know what to do. i try to start the car and got nothing so i try again and it starts up and no noises and the rpms are fine and no leaks or anything.

could there be something seriously wrong that i dont know about? what should i check and do after this horrible thing that i know cant be good at all?

Well, if it is still working then don't knock it. Just pray you didn't do any permanant damage.

However, start saving for a rebuild just in case. I was in an accident with my daily beater recently and ended doing 3 360's before finishing facing oppising traffic. The wheels locked up when I was backwards because the tranny wouldn't let them spin. That was my first worry, that it might have damaged the tranny, but its fine and doesn't show any problems.

If it didn't take a dump right then and there you are probably fine. It seems hard to believe, but this sort of thing happens, and most of the time the trans makes it through.

I was riding shotgun in my friend's truck one day and these two kids wouldn't get out of his way. Finally, they moved over and he drove past, but not before one of them gave him a dirty look and sort of stepped to him. Me, I would have just shrugged it off, but not him. He throws the truck into park from about 30 MPH. Horrible noises, and squeeling tires ensue, and I had to pull him off the kid. The moral of the story is that my friend is a hothead, and if you see his truck coming you may want to move out of his way, because I might not be there to keep him from beating the snot out of you.

No, that wasn't the moral. The moral was that his trans is fine, even after that fiasco, so I wouldn't worry too much if I was you.

Drop the pan and inspect carefully for pieces where they don't belong. Change the filter and fluid, keep an eye on it for awhile.

I haven't heard this for certain about TH700's, but automatics typically are made to shift to 1st before reverse, and the output shaft has to be below a certain speed before it actually engages reverse. So, that's probably what you heard.

Not sure about the not starting part. Fuel pump impact cut-off, perhaps???

it didnt start because i think i was so shocked i forgot to put it in park or maybe when i tried to start it the starter might have gotten stuck out and the second time it might have gotten drawn back in. i cannot be positive tho. so what you are saying is it might have went into 1st before reverse and could be fine? i plan on checking the fluids in the rear and the tranny pan tomorrow and putting fresh in and seeing if it tore teeth on the gears or flywheel. what do i need to fill the rear end up? does anyone know?

Do you mean what type of fluid, how much fluid, or what parts/equipment/tools?

Jack & jack stands or ramps, drain pan, 1/2" wrench, cover gasket, 3/8" drive w/short extension, pump or extension tube to get the fluid in, about 2 qts fluid.

I prefer 75W90 syn gear lube. The type I get doesn't require the additive.
