Need a 700r4 expert fast!
I have a 57 Nomad with a TPI motor and an early 700r4. I have a Dakato Digital dash also. My speedo suddenly quite so I removed the cable driven VSS and found that the driven gear was no longer a gear at all--it has no teeth. What would cause this? If I just replace the gear will the next do the same thing? And more importantly where did the plastic teeth go when they got sheared off. Will this cause a transmission problem? Thanks for the help.

This isn't uncommon. The plastic the gear is made from becomes brittle with age and exposure to oil. Good job GM.
The bits probably wound up in the trans filter. I would drop the pan and service the trans (filter and fluid). This should prevent any damage. Even if they did find their way into the trans internals they probably wouldn't do any harm because the plastic would just get ground up into bits, but fluid and a filter are cheap...
