Ford 8.8 swap?

Ford 8.8 swap?
Has anyone thought about swapping a Ford 8.8 into their F-body? It's as strong as a 12 bolt, parts are cheap and plentyfull, and there are many models with disc brakes in assorted widths. I can get a complete disc/disc set-up for $50 from the local Pick-n-pull. Thought?

The only 8.8 disc rear you will find is 93-95 limited and all 95-up Explorers. They also have the most splines out of the 8.8 Ford lineup. The only disadvantage I can see is that they come with leafs, so you need to cut the brackets and weld some coil brackets on. They also come with a 5x4.5 bolt pattern, so your brakes will need to be swapped over in any event. Don't forget that a lot of 80's Ford boats had the 9" rear end.

03,
93 Cobras (4 lug)
94 and up Mustang
87-88 Turbo Coupe (4 lug) 3.55 or 3.73 ratio
Lincoln Mark VII and LSC
96? and up Explorer
All except the Cobra will be a little wide for a Fox. There are wheels available to use the TC and SN95 rears directly into a Fox. I have an LSC rear we got for $50 during a 1/2 off sale. I need to do some measuring, because it would be a good start if it close to the TA's width. It is a little wider than the TC and SN95 rears.

Yep,
That's what I meant. Those rears are 1.5" wider per side. They will work with stock offset wheels, but the tires tend to get cut by the 1/4 lip.
At one time there was someone on ebay selling brackets that allowed the use of Caddilac calipers to convert a drum 8.8 to disc, though i haven't seem them in a while...

Those are the codes uses on the Explorer 8.8's. The Explorer 8.8's have 31 splines instead of the 28 splines found on the passenger car 8.8's. Track size was 58.5"

thanks guys, ive got a 90 sc that has the independent 8.8 rear with ls and im parting out two of them, i sold the d/d rear for 400 to a guy using it in a cobra kit car, which had 2.73 gears, and i may have one for sale with 3.27 in it that would be interesting in a camaro, too bad i already put a 3.73 ls one in it from a formula.

I read about this at ls1.com, some of the guys have done it over there, which i believe was mentioned already. They had a problem with some of the advertisers on the board not liking it because it took money away from there rearend sales. It's been several months since I have read that post but I am about 95% sure thats what was said. I saw pictures of it. What they did was cut the tubes off the mustang rearend, weld the 3rd gen tubes on it, and made a tourqe arm mount. The hole thing honestly didn't look that complcated, the tourqe arms mount was the most difficult thing to do. Hope this helps.

I have one out of an 88 LSC. I haven't had a chance to see how wide it is yet. I'd also like to get a broken 9-bolt or 10-bolt to cut the brackets off of. I also have a 8.8 31 spline gear carrier. If all goes rite all I'll have to buy is some axles with a GM bolt pattern. I'll redrill the rotors and use the Ford brakes.
