Any real downside from buying a used transmission?

Hey I was wondering what downsides their are to a used flexplate. My dad is strongly opposed to it, so I thought I should ask about it on the boards.

well....its a game of chance really, it may last forever, it may not.

The best you can do is visually inspect it for any cracks, overheated spots, etc. Check the starter gear and make sure it isnt chewed up. if all that is good it "should" be just fine.
