400 HP Monster looking for ideas on tranny and rear selection

Heres the deal... I have an 89 Camaro and I am building a motor to support around 400 HP and around 475 Ft. lBs.. I have no clue as to what my tranny options are as I started this project in hopes of getting a 6 spd. But I no longer want to persue that venue. I need to know what my options are as far as automatic trannies go and how much HP they can handle. I would like a broad view, I mean Im not building a 20000 dollar drag car so I dont need the best of the best, I just need to know what can handle what and for how much also if anyone has any history with the same problem I would also like your imput as well. The rear is another problem, I have a 373 rearend but I am not sure if it will handle the new found power of my 355. I just need some help and I need it truthfully. If you dont know what your talking about please do not post on this. I need this soon as I want to finish up my car before the spring hits.

Thanks to all that look and have something to say,
Tyler

your rear should be fine, for a while atleast

tranny options are few because the 3-4 clutchpack has a horrible history. Your stuck with going to a aftermarket 700r4 or 200-4r or you can sacrifice on the interstate and go with a 3spd th350 or th400

look to spend around 2250+ for a 4spd or 600+ for a 3spd...

An aftermarket 700R4 from Probuilt or Transmission Center (Raptor) will hold your 350. I have a Raptor behind my 383 & it is holding up very well after 2 years & 3 dozen dragstrip runs with sticky tires. You can build up the 7.50" rear, but it will give out sooner or later. I bought axles & a 9" Ford housing from Moser & used a junkyard 3rd member from a Bronco. The 9" Ford is about the strongest you can get for a third gen.

the 9" is the strongest, but also keep in mind that it's got the most parasitic loss, the 12 bolt chevy will hold slightly less power (not enough to make a difference) and puts power to the ground more efficiently.

Probuilt or TCI for a 700R4.

You can always save money on a TH350 and get taller gears in the rear to make up for the lack of a 4th gear.

Or get the G-Force T5.

These are only a few options. Many tranny's available!

What did you do about the rear sway bar? Did you just leave it off, or did you have one made, or is there an aftermarket one that can be purchaced? I am looking into buying a nine inch from Currie but am wondering about this problem.

Depends on sway bar.... I have actually for sale the SPOHN Kit for putting the factory WS6 sway bar on the Moser ford 9".... Its basically a u-bolt weld in kit...then some self modified bushing holders and urethane bushings...along with longer urethane end links and bolts....I started to weld it in and changed directions...

I eneded up using a WOLFE racecraft DRAG racing sway bar.... Since my car does not get much street use... tHAT HAD WELD ON BRACKETS AS WELL...

So if anyone with a 9" wants a swaybar Ill sell my kit plus all the parts to make it work... just e-mail me.
