Assuming it's a manual trans, it is more than likely normal. The end of the input shaft of a manual trans is supported by the pilot bearing in the end of the crankshaft once the trans is installed, so any existing "radial" (up and down) play, with the trans out of the car, will be eliminated when it is installed in the car. Same goes with the output shaft. Once the slip yoke of the driveshaft has been installed, it will pilot the output shaft and remove any excessive radial play also.
Excessive "axial" or end play (in/out) would indicate either worn out bearings or incorrect internal shimming in the trans.
