Does anyone know any good articles on how to remove/install a 700R4? It's coming out of an 1987 Camaro. I could prob do it, but I just want to be safe!!

Let me see if I can remember how I did mine.

1. Take TV cable off of TB (makes it easier on tranny side)
2. Pull dipstick out of tube
3. Raise Car
4. Take off driveshaft and torque arm
5. Disconnect speedo cable, shifter cable, and the electrical connector (driver side
6. Take off exhaust hanger
7. Pull flexplate inspection cover and take off 3 torque converter bolts
8. Put tranny jack under tranny
9. Unbolt tranny crossmember and lower it a tad to get access to the top bellhousing bolts with long extention from the rear.
10. Disconnect tranny cooler lines and TV cable (pass side)
11. Disconnect all 6 bellhousing bolts
12. Make sure nothing is connected to tranny, lower it, and remove it
13. MAKE SURE that you change the speedometer gears if you completely change transmissions
14. install is reverse of removal (Haynes manual style install)
15. when putting the torque converter on the input shaft, make sure that you spin it clockwise while pushing it towards the tranny. It will seat three different times and be very very close to the tranny case (can't fit my fingers in there) when it is fully fitted. Then when you bolt it to the flexplate, it will slide to meet up with it, which is normal. Then I could fit my fingers inbetween the case and TC.
16. Fill with fluid!

If I missed anything, or if you have any questions just ask.

Since you are getting a used tranny, why not replace the the front a nd rear seal. Maybe even put in a corvette servo. Just a thought.

i got my top bellhousing with a 3/8 ratchet with a long extension and a swivel.. Once you just crack them, they should be finger loose...

Make sure u make keen note of the mounts and the frame support bolts... I waited for awhile after I took my tranny out (was hard to find a new 700r4) and had to fiddle to remember but that could just be me..

The tranny cooler lines aren't all that fun, but they aren't that bad. It helps if you have crow's feet sockets for those. Other than that, it's not too bad. How far did you get, and how long did you spend on it so far?

I got the driveshaft off, drained the trans, TV cable, shifter cable off, wiring harness disconnected, cross member and I just started with the torque arm, exhaust hanger, and converter to flywheel bolts but it got way to dark for me to continue working, and I was rolling around in trans fluid cause we had a little accident!! (opps) But I prob only spent like 60-70 of actual work (including jacking it up and down, my home owners association says you can't work on cars in your driveway or street, so it had to come down) and all together a couple of hours running around and finding tools and other things! And actually the coolant lines weren't bad at all once we figured a good way to go at it(we disconnected the lines from the radiator) for the upper line we used vice grips, and the lower line just a wrench, but we had to slip it through a third coolant line that ran across the bottom of the radiator to get it off.

That's an interesting way to get at the cooler lines. I guess it'll be fun tishing them in and out of everything.

Bummer about the home owner's thing. I'd move.

My apartment complex says I can't work on my car, but they are really nice about it. The manager lives in the next building and doesn't mind.....yet.

Here's one tip that MAY make the job a lot less messy.

Drain the freaking thing! That way when you tilt the tail shaft down to get at the top bolts you won't spill fluid all over the place. If you really want to avoid spilling out the tail shaft take a rag and a rubber band or something simlar and place the center of the rag on the tail shaft and slide the rubber band over it. This will keep the fluid from dripping alot, however if lots of fluid comes out then it won't work.

I've pulled the tranny in my car more times than I care to count. Its not hard. Just make sure you get the car up high enough to comfortably work on your back. Thats assuming that you don't have a lift.

FruityOne- I did drain the trans, thats when the "mess" happen. It was a simple and stupid mistake. I was plannig on cleaning the trans pan and as I was lowering it, it slip into the bucket of fluid. But thanks for the tip anyway!

When and if you do tilt the the motor w/tranny to get the upper bell housing bolts, make sure to remove cap from distributor or just remove the entire distributor to play it safe.

don't remove the whole distrib... you'll most liekly have torubles getting it back in and especially for a tranny take out...

Just used a bent wrench or extensions with a swivel and a wratchet, once u crack them they are most of the finger loose...

the cap would be a good idea if u know the firing order, 18436572 and if your going to lift the motor, but why?

get a floor jack, have someone weld like a foot by a foot steel plate on an extra piece that goes into the jack... drill holes on each side, use it to jack the tranny up a lil, wrap a chain and bolt them through the holes, trsut me this will work great and its safe(pulled my tranny out like this and pull big trannies out of buses like this almost daily).. whiles it jacked a lil n chained safely, finish removing the eaiset bellhousing(s) then pull it out...

Sure beats messing with the timing and figuring out tdc

I was able to do the tranny in my car without ever removing the cap, I just got at the bolts from the top of the car, and not the bottom.
